  2. What is an aup? A document of set rules by the school district that explains what you can and cannot do with district owned information systems – including but not limited to internet access, peripherals, and content accessed. Additionally, the AUP outlines the consequences for misuse.

  3. Why Have an AUP For Students? • Teach responsible use of the internet • Provide access to valuable educational sites • Protect students from accessing inappropriate content • Make students aware of proper procedures and consequences if not followed

  4. Why Have an AUP For teachers? • Make known that email, voice mail and all other communications using school equipment are not private and can be made public at anytime • Protect the employer and employees investments by protecting against piracy and viruses • Limit personal use to enhance productivity • Prevent intentional or accidental access to inappropriate images, information, and sites • Make aware of regulations and consequences

  5. Overview of FCPS AUP for Teachers • The Acceptable Use Policy for Fairfax County Public School (FCPS) employees can be located on the county website under employee information tab • Additionally the document can be found by search for - R6410

  6. Overview of FCPS AUP for Teachers Property Ownership All work created using FCPS information system or network are the property of Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) All computers, systems, and network resources are property of FCPS and may not be altered

  7. Overview of FCPS AUP for Teachers Property Ownership All software and license agreements are to be followed with fidelity Installation or download of personal or non-FCPS approved software or programs are prohibited

Overview of FCPS AUP for Teachers Respect for Others Log off after use Don’t intentionally disrupt, delete, or modify the work of others or the system Be considerate when using limited materials • Use materials and workstations are directed • Equipment problems should be reported to • the school based technology specialist (SBTS) immediately

  9. Overview of FCPS AUP for Teachers Ethical Conduct • All personal use of FCPS materials and property should be limited to a minimum • Never share your password or account information • Passwords for access to FCPS purchased site licenses should not be given out to non-FCPS employees

  10. Overview of FCPS AUP for Teachers Ethical Conduct • Respect the intellectual property of others • Reading, modifying, disclosing, or removing files owned by others is prohibited without authorization

  11. Overview of FCPS AUP for Teachers Appropriate Use • Offensive and harassing language is prohibited • No information should be sent or accessed that violates the privacy, well being, and protection of students and staff

Overview of FCPS AUP for Teachers Appropriate Use Accessed materials should be consistent with the educational mission of FCPS All classroom web pages should be approved by the principal prior to posting • All materials that are unsolicited • or inappropriate should be • deleted immediately • and brought to the attention of • the SBTS

  13. Overview of FCPS AUP for Teachers Nothing is Private or Confidential All materials, content, emails, and communications are the property of FCPS and are can be made public at anytime All FCPS official communications must be conducted using an FCPS email account

  14. Overview of FCPS AUP for Teachers Nothing is Private or Confidential All personal emails sent or received using FCPS equipments is subject to the same disclosure All accessed content can be recorded, reviewed, and retained by the school system

Consequences for Violation of AUP - Teachers • The principal or program manager may restrict or terminate user’s access to any or all FCPS network systems • Discipline measures up to and including legal action, suspension, fines, and termination can be levied for intentional or unintentional violation of the AUP

  16. How to ensure you are following the AUP • Don’t use district equipment for personal use • Prevent posting inappropriate images, messages, and content in social media sites

How to ensure you are following the AUP • Refrain from using student and school images and information for non-school related reasons • Be knowledgeable and respectful of all content accessed on the district’s equipment • Remember that all information and communications are public and subject to disclosure

  18. Overview of FCPS AUP for Students • Students and teachers can access the Acceptable Use Policy for FCPS students in the Student Rights and Responsibility booklet • Additionally, it can be located on the FCPS website under the student tab

  22. Overview of FCPS AUP for Students • Respect Property • No modification or rearrangement may be made to any peripheral equipment • Problems with equipment should be reported immediately • Workstations are to remain in designated places

  23. Overview of FCPS AUP for Students • Safety and Security No internet chat or social media site may be accessed • No information should be posted that violates the privacy, well being, and protection of students and staff • Do not reveal any personal information to anyone unknown

Overview of FCPS AUP for Students • Safety and Security • Report all inappropriate materials received immediately • Unauthorized access to blocked content is not allowed • Viewing, downloading, sharing, and accessing illegal materials are prohibited • All student produced web pages must be approved by a teacher prior to publication

  25. Consequences for Violation of AUP - students The school may restrict or terminate student’s access to any or all FCPS network systems Legal action, suspension, fines, and explosion can be levied for intentional or unintentional violation of the AUP

  26. How to Ensure the AUP is followed by your students • Review the policies with the students in terms that are grade specific and they will understand • Post the main points of the policy in the classroom in a prominent spot

  27. How to Ensure the AUP is followed by your students Talk to students about personal safety, boundaries, and how images and words will stay on the internet for all to see Teach students what to do if unauthorized content is obtained Monitor student activity often
