  3. Apartheid • Definition: Lawcreated to enforce segregation of people by race. • Literally means: “Separateness”

  4. African National Congress (ANC) • Organization formed by black Africans in 1912 to help bring people of all races together to fight for rights and freedoms.

  5. Discrimination • Unfair and unequal treatment of a group

  6. Segregation • Separation of humans into racial groups

  7. township • A residential development that confinednon-whites living near or working in white-only communities • Soweto (South Western Township) Township was a famous example, located in Johannesburg, South Africa.

  8. Shanty Town • Slum settlement of plywood, corrugated metal, sheets of plastic, and cardboard boxes • Many non-white Africans were forced to live in shanty towns during Apartheid.
