Status of the CO2 cooling tests at NikhefIBL General Meeting Bart Verlaat / Auke-Pieter Colijn 5 November 2009
Nikhef CO2 cooling laboratory Insulated test box Vacuum isolation test CO2 2PACL with PLC Insulation storage PC’s with PVSS Electronics rack Julabo cryostat
CO2 2PACL Lab Cooler (1) 2PACL with PLC Test box with experiment • Supplies: • Massflow • Enthalpy • Pressure • Supplies: • Cold Cryostat • Supplies: • Power • Supplies: • Temperature • Pressure • Voltage • Demand for: • Mass flow • Enthalpy • Pressure Power supply • Demand for: • Temperature • Demand for: • Power • Supplies data: • HTC • Pressure drop • CHF • Dry out PC with PVSS to control the cooler and experiment
CO2 2PACL Lab Cooler (3) Test box connections PLC and electronics Pre-heater Cryostat connection LHCb Accumulator LHCb / SWEP Condenser Existing pump unit
Lab cooler status • Cold cooler is under construction. All drawings are in the workshop • Both accumulator and HX will be cooled by the Julabo Cryostat • Capacity of cryostat = capacity of CO2 2PACL (minus some tbd losses) • Cryostat is commissioned and works. • Currently filled with glycol (-30°C minimum), but will be filled with Alcohol later (some safety issues still to handle) • Plant is currently running in warm mode
Temporary solution: warm cooling Warm cooler ideal for commissioning pumps and test protocols! Nikhef central 8°C cooling water Room temperature bottle = room temperature evaporation Warm cooling plant Cold cooling plant
Nikhef CO2 cooling test facility2PACL lab cooler and test box Siemens PLC Room temperature bottle as accumulator Room temperature evaporation in test tube Cold water condenser (8ºC) Ready to test protocols and preliminary stave tests 2PACL lab cooler prototype at NIKHEF
Current research activities • Gear pumps for CO2. • IBL cooling tubes • Stainless steel with capillary for dimensioning • Carbon tube • Any other tube…. • Automatic measurement protocols for efficient testing. • (Once your tube can be tested with a 1 push button, scanning you sample and make a report……)
Carbon tube test Carbon tube with poco foam testing started today. Carbon tube is tested at room temperature evaporation at several flows and several powers
First power scan of carbon tube(almost live) 90 Watt Flow= 0.45 g/s 60 Watt 30 Watt Dry-out of the carbon tube Tsat = 24’C Sorry for not attending the IBL meeting today.
Carbon tube PVSS interface Dry-out of the carbon tube Dry-out stops power supply Power Scan settings
Gear pumps in series(To boost pressure head) Due to large internal leak (low CO2 viscosity), the gear pumps could be operated in series. Gather 1M-J/12-11/X-SS/S/Qk200/DLC/ gear pumps were investigated.
