Diabetes Camp is Essential • Type 1 diabetes: a demanding and incurable auto-immune disease • Children and Families are responsible for hour-by-hour medical • self-management • Isolation, the burden of self-care and the cost can lead to poor long-term • medical outcomes: • Retinopathy • Kidney disease • Vascular and heart disease • Peripheral nerve damage • Depression • Camp is educational, supportive, a respite for kids and families, and FUN!
What Children Gain from Diabetes Camp • Education about insulin, carbohydrate counts, nutrition, and physical activity • Real-life experience with “best practices” diabetes management techniques • Immersion into an environment of learning about the factors that affect blood glucose levels • Role models, peer support and inspiration. • A break from the burden of self-care as Camp’s clinical staff and counselors help manage each child’s diabetes • Friends who understand; adults who care.
Camp Kudzu – Best in Class • American Camp Association accredited. Very few diabetes camps around the world have this accreditation. Over 300 standards of care, planning, operation, risk management and staffing have been evaluated. • Some of the largest sessions in the USA, with 180-200 children and teens taking part in each summer session and creating a vibrant community. • Dedicated year-round professional staff with education and credentials in their fields of expertise. • Well-trained, screened and motivated volunteers. • High level of involvement of health care professionals, including pediatric endocrinologists, nurses with Certified Diabetes Education status, registered dieticians, physician’s assistants and nurse practitioners.

Strategic Plan • Expand educational element in every Camp Kudzu activity • Maintain character of the community served, distinguished by its diversity of culture, race, socio-economics • Deepen sense of community • Expand geographic sites for activities • Create basis to document outcomes and Return on Investment • Invert fundraising model to rely on individuals for 75% of donated revenue • Generate sufficient financial resources to minimize the cost to families • Assess opportunity for external research projects, e.g., clinical, medical devices, etc. • Add diversity to the Camp Kudzu Board consistent with the population we serve • Assess potential to own and operate a CampKudzu site
