Hermann Ludwig Ferdinand von Helmholtz was born in 1821 in Germany (Potsdam). His father was a professor of philosophy. Although Helmholtz graduated from medical school in Berlin in 1843, he directed most of his time and attention to the study of physiology at University of Königsberg. While still quite young, he invented the ophthalmoscope in 1850. He was a great scientist as well and published the definitive text on optics-- Handbook of Physiological Optics. He also is known for his landmark description of the physical law of "conservation of energy". He died in 1894. Photograph courtesy ofNational Library of Medicine
