The right for health:The WHO Constitution (1946) The States parties to this Constitution declare, in conformity with the Charter of the United Nations, that the following principles are basic to the happiness, harmonious relations and security of all peoples : Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. The enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health is one of the fundamental rights of every human being without distinction of race, religion, political belief, economic or social condition (...)”

  13. AFRICA – THE SEVEN MOST PRESSING QUESTIONS Question 1 :WHERE ARE THE POOR ? With increasing tendency – 25 % of the worlds population live with less than 1 US $ per day

  14. Question 2 : NOT FOR OIL - THE BATTLE FOR CLEAN WATER IS THE FUTURE A World of Water?Question 2 1.1 Billion people do not have access to clean water! 2.4 Billion people are suffering under the lack of adequate sanitation facilities !

  15. Question 3 : HUNGER & OBESITY One billion adults are overweight… But 170 million children in poor countries underweight Over three million die each year as a result of under-nutrition

  20. WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION Regional Office Africa - Report 2006 - The report 2006 shows clearly that improving HEALTH SYSTEMS are the key to providing a range of essential health care. African governments and their partners needs to invest more funds to strengthen the continent’s fragile health system. The challenge for African governments and their partners is to coordinate the provision of health care more effectively than ever before, and to ensure that all funds are used in an accountable manner to the benefit of the African people. WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION Regional Office Africa - Report 2006 - • The challenges are many , including: • weak and fragmented health systems; • inadequate resources for scaling up proven inter- ventions; • limited access to the health services and technologies that are available; • poor management of human resources for health • recurrent natural and manmade disasters and emergencies • extreme poverty APOCALYPSE – an African faith because we are speechless, helpless, idle, and unimaginative ?

WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION Regional Office Africa- Report 2006 - Improving the health of the 738 Million people living in the 43 member countries of the African Union by the WHO but also by private initiatives, donors and non for profit organizations is absolutely essential , along with education, good governance and sound economic policy. This can not be achieved without remarkable and increasing levels of investments in healthcare, education and management.

WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION Regional Office Africa- Report 2006 - • Key Solutions • African governments and their partners should allocate more funds for health systems • Subsidized health care and social health insurance schemes are needed • Sector wide approach would allow for effective coordination of domestic and external resources • Strong health systems would be an effective platform for delivering all essential health care • Non-For-Profit Organizations are urgent called for investments in more and more needs tailored health care facilities in the African regions

  27. MDG 8 The MDG 8 goal is: the rich countries should spend 0,7 % of their GDP for the poor countries. Only Denmark, Luxembourg , the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden had actually honored that commitment; the USA gave 0,22 % ( but the most of them for military help ), the OECD gave 0,42 %. The financial help the Sub-Saharan Zone per capita is decreased from US$ 34 in 1990 to US$ 21 in 2003. It need new approaches and a common spirit for improving the Health Care Systems in Africa which should include the big donations funds, the medical industry, leading health care Providers, the national governments in Africa, the WHO, the NGO’s, and the citizens in Africa as well

  32. ZAKAT DONATION PROJECTS Non for Profit Hospitals Narrated Haritha bin Wahab: I heard the Prophet saying, "O people! Give in charity as a time will come upon you when a person will wander about with his object of charity and will not find anybody to accept it, and one (who will be requested to take it) will say, "If you had brought it yesterday, would have taken it, but to-day I am not in need of it."

SGH - ZAKAT PROJECTS / NON FOR PROFIT HOSPITALS • SGH has developed a specialized program for projects which are donated as ZAKAT to the governments but also non for profit hospitals for the poor together with the health care industry • SGH is planning, constructing, equipping and operating these Hospitals as their own contribution to develop corporate social responsibility to stamp attribute of developed societies in the Arab World. • The ZAKAT and non for profit projects are located in Oman, UAE, Kashmir, Sudan, Eritrea, Chad, Nigeria, Congo-Kinshasa, Ghana, and Nigeria ; further projects are planned in other African countries, Pakistan, and Afghanistan as well.

Standardized Basis Architecture Model located in or close to a city (suburban region) of not more than 500.000 population, in a rural environment but with accessibility and basic facilities Turn Key: 5 Million USD ( all inclusive ) ; Adaptable and modifiable construction – tailor able to the regional different needs 2. Structured and designed for secondary care; inpatients 50 beds; 12 outpatient clinics; calculated app. 2500 Inpatients ( 25- 30 %) and 7500 Outpatients = 10,000 patients p.a. ; access round the clock 3. Medical emphases addressed to the common disease of Africa e.g. Malaria, Hepatitis, and AIDS. Furthermore it will cover : Infectious Diseases, Simple Traumata, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology (Maternal Care), basic ophthalmology, dermatology, ENT, etc…basic abdominal surgery, basic dental medicine, simple laboratory (normal function), Simple X-ray.

  37. SGH Essentials: African Projects (2) 4. Hospital design: The Emergency Unit operating 24 hours x 7days a week but it will not cover any tertiary care, specialized clinics, specialized surgery. Patients who need tertiary care will be referred with well equipped ambulance to the next suitable hospitals. Emergency/Recovery rooms with 9 beds. 2 Delivery Wards Capacity for 3 Operating Theatres, but will start with only 2 (1 in emergency, one in surgery ) Small blood center collecting donations from relatives, as a facility to manage own supply of needed blood 5. nursing education & training facility will be available as in all SGH ventures 6. Typical staff structure will start with 70 employees at the beginning. Managerial structure must have CMO & COO.

Outpatient Clinics: total 12 ; of them are 2 OB & GYN , 4 Internal Medicine, 1 Dental Medicine,1 Ophthalmology, 1 ENT, 2 Pediatric , 1 Urology/ Nephrology. 8. Environment emergency power supply : UPS and generator Fresh air system. Complete water treatment Incinerator for human waste. Waste management septic tank. The hospital should be able to function in a supporting environment & in presence of efficient utilities and infrastructure.

We will start in this year with our first NFP- Hospital in Pakistan; we will use our experience from this project to start in 2008 with the first NFP hospital in Africa. 3. We will develop a “ standardized hospital model “ for Africa which is able to cover the most pressing needs but also adaptable for special needs in the region 4. We plan to set up within the next ten years 10 hospitals; each year a hospital plus a nursing school; we want to speed up the time frame for further hospitals but also to improve the medical quality and economic sustainability

Non For Profit Projects needs a spiritual & religious fundament and a team spirit of brotherhood and selflessness between all required partners – a new definition of partnership , social responsibility and teamwork 6. We invite to participate in these challenging task the big development funds & finance institutions the Non Governmental Organizations the African governments the World Organizations and their regional representatives as e.g. WHO, UNESCO, IHF, JCAHO, and the African Union Commission the Medical and Pharmaceutical Industry the Universities and other educational institutes
