Three-Step Interview By: Kendall McLucas And Josh Wertheim
Purpose • A great way to inspire students to share their thinking. Will allow students to ask questions, take notes, and engage in conversation.
Description • The three-step interview helps students personalize their learning and listen to and appreciate the ideas and thinking of others. • Active listening and paraphrasing by the interviewer develops understanding and empathy for the thinking of the interviewee. • There are two different types of three-step interviews; groups of two and groups of three.
Procedure Groups of Two Groups of Three • Place students into groups of two. • Assign each student a role: interviewer and interviewee. • Student pairs reverse roles, repeating the interview process. • Each pair then joins another pair to form groups of four. Students introduce their pair partner and share what the partner had to say about the topic at hand. • Place students into groups of three. • Assign each student a role: interviewer, interviewee, and reporter. • Rotate roles after each interview. • Have students do a Round Robin and share the key information they recorded when they were the reporter.
