5. PLANKTON The majority of plankton are microscopic.
They float on the surface on the ocean.
6. PLANKTON There are two types of plankton.
Phytoplankton are plant-like organisms.
Zooplankton are animal-like organisms.
7. NEKTON Nekton are free-swimming organisms.
They are the majority of organisms that you probably think of when you hear “marine life.” They are very abundant in the ocean.
8. NEKTON Nekton organisms have the ability to swim freely throughout the body of the ocean.
9. NEKTON There are many types of nekton.
10. BENTHOS Benthos are organisms that live on or in the ocean floor.
They live in the mud, sand and rock that is found on the ocean floor.
Many benthos organisms are probably very familiar to you.
11. BENTHOS There are many different types of benthos organisms.

Plankton are vulnerable to weather and organisms that eat them.
Nekton
Nekton must watch out for predators and man-made objects!
Benthos
Benthos must also protect themselves from predators and create sheltered homes.

15. Your Turn! Create with a buddy a list of 20 marine organisms.
Identify which life zone they live in.
You must represent all 3 ocean life zones in your list!
Be prepared to share them with the class!
16. HOMEWORK Choose 3 of your organisms (1 from each ocean life zone).
Draw an illustration for each organism.
Write 2-3 sentences about that organism underneath the illustration.
