Three Zones • The ocean has three different zones based on light. Knowing what you already know about the ocean, what would you name each zone? • 1. • 2. • 3.
Sunlit Zone(Euphotic Zone) • The top zone is the eupthoic or Sunlit Zone • This zone gets sunlight and photosynthesis can occur. • Plants can grow here • Phytoplankton, zooplankton, and plants are found here • It goes down about 660 feet
Animals Found in the Sunlit Zone • Sharks and rays, jellyfish, sea turtles, seals, coral, and zooplankton
Twilight Zone(Dysphotic Zone) • Some sunlight reaches this zone, but not enough for photosynthesis to occur • Goes down about 3,300 feet • There is an increase in water pressure and the water is dark • No plants are found in this zone
Animals found in the Twilight Zone • Octopus, squid, the hatchet fish deep sea anglerfish, and the viperfish • These animals must be able to survive cold temperatures.
Midnight Zone(Aphotic Zone) • No sunlight reaches this zone • Depths of close to 20,000 feet • Very cold and completely dark • Water pressure can be as much as two tons per square inch • Fewer organisms than the other zones • No plants in this zone
Animals found in the Midnight Zone • Angler fish, tripod fish, sea cucumber, snipe eel, opposomshrimp, black swallower, and vampire squid • Some animals don’t have eyes
