  1. Species and Specimen Thematic Network Report Progress Report First Semester, 2010 IABIN Technical Workin Group Meeting Knoxville, TN August 2010

  2. Introduction Component 1 (interoperability and data access) Component 2 (creation of data content) Component 3 (tools for decision makers) Component 4 (sustainability) SSTN Progress Report, First Semester 2010

  3. 1. Introduction 2008: The SSTN finished the execution of all activities corresponding to component 1 (interoperability and data access). 2009: INBio assumed the cost of maintaining and further enhancing the two developed tools and the SSTNA portal. 2010: INBio continued developing Ara but requested funding to maintain portal.

  4. 2. Component 1 • All activities were concluded in 2008 (Plinian Core standard, Ara software tool, portal based on GBIF´s portal).

  5. 2. Component 1 (and 4) Additional funding to further develop Ara: PROMEBIO/IRBIO, $25,000, 6 months (pending the results of an open bid), data quality control tools. CONICIT: $62,000, 2 years, confirmed, observations, label printing, specimen transactions. FUNDECOOPERACIÓN (Benin, Buthan): $20,000, 1 year, finishing up.

  6. 2. Component 1 • Data providers • 19 specimen and species data providers. • About 3,500,000 specimen records (one more million if we re-index INBio´s database). • About 5,000 species records

  7. 2. Component 1 • Users of Ara: • Installed and in operation: • Museo Entomológico de León (Nicaragua) • Museo de Malacología de la Universidad de Panamá (Panamá) • National Biodiversity Centre (Bután) • In process: • Institute of Jamaica (Jamaica) • Argentina (National B.I. Network)

  8. 2. Component 1 • Data access statistics

  9. 3. Component 2 (creation of data content) • Specimen information seed money grants: 33; 8 have concluded. Estimated # = 5 million. • Species information seed money grants: 13, 1 done, 1450+4,500=6,000 aprox. Estimated # = 36,275 records. • Assessed progress reports from 46 institutions that are already executing a project through a seed money grant.

  10. 4. Component 3 (tools for decision makers) • Two proposals approved and implemented: “Sistema para la toma de decisiones con base en categorías de conservación y usos de la biodiversidad” and “Sistema para el modelado de escenarios de acciones de desarrollo o posibles amenazas a la biodiversidad.

  11. 5. Component 4 (sustainability) • The view held by the SSTN CI has been presented since 2008, not only in previous reports, but also in the Panama Council meeting and in the IEC meeting in Washington DC last October 2008. • For 2009, INBio assumed the costs of operation of the SSTN portal and the cost of further developing the two tools. • In addition, INBio got a grant from EOL to do a feasibility study in order to implement a regional EOL in Central America. • Toolkit was promoted at e-biosphere Conference and hope to present a proposal to JRS to implement it in African countries.

  12. 5. Component 4 (sustainability) • A study was conducted for PROMEBIO: Diagnóstico de capacidades, vacíos y mecanismos para la operación del PROMEBIO. • A strong recommendation: become regional leaders of IABIN.
