  1. Resume Formatting

  2. Parts of a Resume • Heading (personal information) • Career Objective • Education • Work Experience • Volunteering • Other Achievements • References

  3. Header Name Address City, Province Phone # Email

  4. Inappropriate Information • Age • Height • Weight • Social Insurance Number • State of health • Marital status • Citizenship • Religion

  5. Career Objective A career objective must: • Highlight that you are a qualified candidate • Emphasize the contribution that you can make to the organization • Entice the employer to read the rest of your application

  6. Education • In reverse chronological order • Don’t abbreviate • If you have gone to more than one school include that • You can include your grades (ie. Hounours) if you think it will help you (you do not have to though)

  7. Look at the formatting • Bolded Heading, Date and description • Tabbed to align perfectly • Throughout your resume tour indents will line up

  8. Work Experience • Employers are not expecting you to have tons of work experience they are expecting for this to be your first job • Think about what you have done that could be considered work, babysitting, yard work… • List your duties and responsibilities of the job, think of what an employer would like to hear • Babysitting… what could we put?

  9. Work Experience Example • My formatting is the same from one section to the next • Very Important to make your resume look professional

  10. Volunteering + Other Achievements • Keep the formatting the same as with Education and Work Experience • Give each of these their own section • Other Achievements could be called something else (skills, certifications, awards)

  11. References • Between 3-5 • Make sure you ask them first • They should be people that have seen you work or would be a good character reference • If someone has seen you work but you don’t think they will give you a good reference… DON’T USE THEM!

  12. Reference Example Mike Anthony Restaurant Manager Burger World, North Bay 705-452-4383

  13. Formatting • Consider the following important points: • Layout • Margins: 1” x 1” • Consistency with format • Paper quality and colour • Excellent print quality (single-sided) • Font and size • Length of resumé (2 pages) cover letter 1, references 1 • Use bullets (not *, , -)
