  3. 1. These adjectives are emphatic and always precede the nouns they modify. • 2. Alterius is commonly used for the genitive of alius. • 3. Alius and alter are frequently used in pairs with the following meanings: • (a) alius ... alius = one ... another: • Alius murus latus est, alius angustus. • One wall is wide, another is narrow. • (b) alii ... alii = some ... others: • Alii pueri aquam, alii terram amant. • Some boys like the water, others like the land. • (c) alter ... alter = the one ... the other: • Magister alterum puerum laudavit; alterum accusavit. • The teacher praised the one boy; the other he blamed.
