3rd Declension AdjectivesLesson 47 Latin II April 28-May 2, 2014
Third Declension Adjectives • So far, the adjectives we’ve learned belong to the first and second declensions: • bonus, bona, bonum • sacer, sacra, sacrum • latus, lata, latum • The 3 forms correspond to masculine, feminine, and neuter nominative forms.
Third Declension Adjectives • Our new group of adjectives belong to 3rd declension. • Third declension adjectives decline like 3rd declension i-stem nouns, except that they all use –i instead of –e in the ablative singular (like the neuter i-stem nouns do). • Let’s see what some of these adjectives look like in your vocabulary list…
Third Declension Adjectives • celer, celeris, celere: swift, quick • facilis, facile: easy, doable • fortis, forte: strong, brave • omnis, omne: all, every • par, paris (gen.): equal, equal to (+ dat.) • BUT WAIT! Why don’t they all have 3 forms, like our old –us,-a,-um friends from long ago?
Third Declension Adjectives • celer, celeris, celere • facilis, facile • fortis, forte • omnis, omne • par, paris (gen.) • Just because all 3 genders aren’t listed doesn’t mean they don’t exist. • celer, celeris, celere • facilis, facilis, facile • fortis, fortis, forte • omnis, omnis, omne • par, par, par • Often the masculine/feminine forms are identical, so they’re only listed once, like in facilis, fortis and omnis.
Here’s what “omnis, omne” looks like on its adjective chart. • Most charts combine masculine/feminine into 1 column labeled “M/F”---it saves space. • Singular • M F N • omnisomnisomne • omnisomnisomnis • omniomniomni • omnemomnemomne • omniomniomni • Plural • omnesomnesomnia • omniumomniumomnium • omnibus omnibusomnibus • omnesomnesomnia • omnibus omnibus omnibus
Just as we saw when dealing with 1st/2nd declension adjectives with 3rd declension nouns, you can have the combo of 1st/2nd declension nouns with 3rd declension adjectives. • Singular • M F • fortispuercelerpuella • fortispuericelerispuellae • fortipueroceleripuellae • fortempuerumcelerempuellam • fortipueroceleripuellā • Plural • fortes puericelerespuellae • fortiumpuerorumceleriumpuellarum • fortibuspuerisceleribuspuellis • fortes pueroscelerespuellas • fortibuspuerisceleribuspuellis
