Citizens of the 21st century need to think critically and creatively, embrace diversity and ambiguity, and create as well as consume information. They need to be resourceful and self-reliant, while also skilled at collaboration and group process. --Framework For 21st Century Learning
Creating 21st Century Learners • Students will continue to need foundational skills in language arts, math, science and social studies. • It would be a disservice to our students, our community and our nation not to continue strong fine arts programs. • Time is and will continue to be a key variable in what will be taught.
What are 21st Century Skills? Collaboration Financial Literacy Technology Integration Creativity Health Literacy Research Skills Business & Entrepreneurial Literacy Innovation Problem Solving Information Literacy Civic Literacy Critical Thinking Media Literacy Social & Cross-Cultural Skills Innovation Flexibility Leadership & Responsibility Productivity & Accountability Global Awareness Ethics and Legal Responsibilities
Empowering 21stCentury Leaders • What are community/business/workplace expectations for our students? (Should we add to or take away from the previous list?) • National, state and local agreement will need to be reached on what a high school graduate should know and what skills should be developed. • Professional development/training will remain critical.
Justifying 21stCentury Expenditures • Financial support, quality programs, proper accountability – all are necessary. • Accountability is not as simple as looking at point-in-time test scores. • To be globally competitive means that we have to invest in the resources (including education) to make us competitive.
Enrollment Projections • Rockingham County and Harrisonburg schools will continue to grow. • Accurate projections of the rate of student growth continue to be difficult. 1.04% Annual Growth? 1.3% Annual Growth?

Learning in the future… • Will be more real-world and project based • Will involve interconnected, technology-rich environments • May not include traditional, 180 day school year calendars with repetitive face-to-face contact • Will take place anytime, anywhere • Will involve more cooperation between higher education and K-12
Current Dual Enrollment • RCPS currently has 208 students enrolled in nine dual enrollment classes • Harrisonburg has 162 students dual enrolled in seven classes • Many of these classes are offered through BRCC • Dual enrollment also available through the Massanutten Regional Governor’s School for Environmental Science and Technology which includes students from both HCPS and RCPS
Goals for 2020 • Fewer traditional classes • Technology-rich learning environments • Seamless education--no barriers for K-16 • Nontraditional school calendar
Distance/Online Learning • Current offerings: • Virtual Virginia coursework • Rosetta Stone language acquisition • Increased use of online course management systems including Moodle • Likely the wave of the future • Teachers’ roles will be different (facilitator, content provider/organizer, collaborator)
Challenges & Obstacles • Definition of what students need to know/learn • Accountability and assessment requirements • Alternative Education program enhancement • Rising costs of: • technology • capital needs • highly qualified teachers and administrators
One thing is sure… Cooperation among all of us is key to educating our students. Questions?
