West Virginia Hospital Association (WVHA) • John Hopkins “On the CUSP” Prevention of CLABSI project • Creation of List Serve for WV IPs • Promotion of APIC-WV meetings • Increased Membership • Asked CEOs to sign pledge to commit to reducing CLABSIs • Encourage their IPs to become members of APIC-WV • WV overall CLABSI rate was lowered from 1.8/1000 central line days to 1.0/1000 central line days

  8. West Virginia Hospital Association • Funding for IP education for WV Critical Access Hospitals • Monetary support for APIC-WV fall educational conference • Up to 61 Critical Access IPs and staff • Increased conference attendance • Nationally recognized speakers • Pertinent topics

West Virginia Medical Institute Quality Improvement Organization (WVMI QIO) • 9th Scope of Work – MRSA initiative • WVMI staff attended APIC-WV in-service on NHSN enrollment • Best practices shared throughout the project on improving patient outcomes • !0th Scope of Work • Currently enrolled in CAUTI prevention • Upcoming projects include C-diff, SSI prevention

  10. West Virginia Medical Institute Quality Improvement Organization • APIC-WV representation on WVMI QIO Advisory Committee • Sharing best practices • Communicate on current projects • Coordinate efforts to meet patient safety goals • Hospital Engagement Networks in CMS Partnership for Patients

West Virginia Bureau of Public Health • Two APIC-WV members attended CDC HAI Train-the-Trainer with HAI Coordinator and BPH staff • Two APIC-WV members were appointed to Region III Collaborative for HAI Prevention • Attended Regional Collaborative meeting in Philadelphia to share and celebrate successes

  14. West Virginia Bureau of Public Health • Provided APIC Ambulatory Surgery Center course training for IPs at no cost • Ten out of eleven WV ASCs participated • Attendees were provided with free one year membership in APIC and APIC ASC Took Kit

West Virginia Bureau of Public Health • Long Term Care Sector • Training course planned for 2012 - WV-APIC providing assistance with course content • First regional training held Fall 2011 in Randolph County with great response • 2011 – BPH distributed APIC Long Term Care manuals to all LTCF in WV

West Virginia Health Care Authority • WV Legislature passed HAI mandatory reporting law in 2007 • Delegated authority for implementation to a newly formed panel to work with WV HCA • Four APIC-WV members appointed to panel • Law mandated CBIC certified Infection Preventionists, two of which must be nurses, from both rural and urban practices

West Virginia Health Care Authority and WV-APIC • Panel was instrumental in ensuring that NHSN used as reporting mechanism • Information and education disseminated to IPs throughout state on reporting requirements • Provided guidance in choosing indicators • Assisted with conferring rights in NHSN

  18. West Virginia Health Care Authority and WV-APIC • 2011 – encouraged HCA to adopt CMS reporting requirements to avoid additional reporting burdens to IPs in the state • Discussions continuing on data validation

  19. Summary WV-APIC is collaborating with our partners in West Virginia to • Improve our patient outcomes • Share best practices and provide resources to our colleagues in Infection Prevention • Help shape public policy to improve healthcare in our state
