The Sin and Restoration of Simon Peter Lk. 22:43-62
Introduction The story of Peter’s life grips our attention --- This is true because he was so human – so much like ourselves
A downtrend precedes everyfall The fall itself maybe sudden, but the movement toward the edge is a gradual process Peter took the following downward steps:
1. Self-confidence Lk. 22:33 [33] And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death.
Mt. 26:33 [33] Peter answered and said unto him, Though all men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I never be offended.
2. Rashness Jn. 18:10 [10] Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.
3. He followed afar The Christian who allows too much distance to exist between himself and the Lord will likely stumble
Js. 4:8 [8] Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.
4. Evil associates Lk. 22:55 [55] And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and were set down together, Peter sat down among them.
1 Cor. 15:33 [33] Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners. 33 Be not deceived: Evil companionships corrupt good morals. (ASV)
Peter tried to pass of the first taunting statement with ignorance
Lk. 22:56-57 [56] But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said, This man was also with him.[57] And he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not.
He met the second question with a very striking denial Lk. 22:58 [58] And after a little while another saw him, and said, Thou art also of them. And Peter said, Man, I am not.
Mk. 14:66-71 [66] And as Peter was beneath in the palace, there cometh one of the maids of the high priest:[67] And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him, and said, And thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth
[68] But he denied, saying, I know not, neither understand I what thou sayest. And he went out into the porch; and the cock crew.[69] And a maid saw him again, and began to say to them that stood by, This is one of them.
[70] And he denied it again. And a little after, they that stood by said again to Peter, Surely thou art one of them: for thou art a Galilaean, and thy speech agreeth thereto.[71] But he began to curse and to swear, saying, I know not this man of whom ye speak.
Three times Peter denied the Lord --- he was guilty of falsehood, of swearing, of disloyalty “We do not condone the sin, but we pity the sinner”
Jesus turned and looked at Peter Lk. 22:61 [61] And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.
He “went out” – to be alone with his sin and God Lk. 22:62 [62] And Peter went out, and wept bitterly.
He acted immediately “Delay dulls or deadens the conscience”
1. A Christian may fall 1 Cor. 10:12 [12] Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall. A Christian may fall in his strongest points!
2. There is always a way of escape provided so we need not fall 1 Cor. 10:13 [13] There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
3. The Lord does not give up on us when we sin 2 Pet. 3:9 [9] The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
God restores the one who sins and repents We should help restore those who fall --- bring them back to the Father
Gal. 6:1-2 [1] Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.[2] Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
4. The restored one needs to be put to work If a disciple is weak – we need to remember that spiritual strength comes through exercise
1 Cor. 15:58 [58] Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.
“The exalted Christ used the penitent Peter on the day of Pentecost.”
