Lk. 3:21-22 [21] Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, [22] And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.
Mt. 3:13-17 [13] Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. [14] But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? [15] And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him
[16] And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: [17] And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

“Then cometh Jesus” He was not an infant but a responsible person coming of His own will Likewise, our obedience should be voluntary – “from the heart”
Rom. 6:17 [17] But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
Col. 3:23 [23] And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;
His baptism stands between His private life and His public life Our baptism is also a separating act – before it is the old life, after it is the new life
Rom. 6:4 [4] Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
Col. 1:13 [13] Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
“From Galilee to Jordan” – a distance of some 60 miles Must have required some 2-3 days of travel TO JESUS, THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERED WAS DOING THE WILL OF THE FATHER!

He came “unto John to be baptized of him.” Though John was a great man, he was inferior to Jesus

1. “The heavens were open” Mk. 1:10 [10] And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him:
When Christ died on the cross – God’s great plan of salvation was opened to sinful man

3. The Father spoke “Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.” This is the Father’s first recorded word to the Son
Here on the banks of the Jordan, we have the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, into whose names we are baptized
Mt. 28:19 [19] Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Have you been baptized into Christ? 2 Cor. 6:2 ---[2] (For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)
