  2. The Baptism Of Jesus

Lk. 3:21-22 [21] Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, [22] And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.

  4. Mt. 3:13-17 [13] Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. [14] But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? [15] And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him

  5. [16] And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: [17] And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

  6. This is a beautiful story: Because of its simplicity Because it reveals the state of Jesus’ mind Because it provides an example of perfectobedience

  7. I. A voluntary act

  8. “Then cometh Jesus” He was not an infant but a responsible person coming of His own will Likewise, our obedience should be voluntary – “from the heart”

  9. Rom. 6:17 [17] But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.

  10. Col. 3:23 [23] And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;

  11. II. A separating act

  12. His baptism stands between His private life and His public life Our baptism is also a separating act – before it is the old life, after it is the new life

  13. Rom. 6:4 [4] Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

  14. Col. 1:13 [13] Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

  15. III. An inconvenient act

  16. “From Galilee to Jordan” – a distance of some 60 miles Must have required some 2-3 days of travel TO JESUS, THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERED WAS DOING THE WILL OF THE FATHER!

  17. THIS SHOULD BE OUR MAINCONCERN – DOING THE WILL FATHER

  18. Mt. 7:21 [21] Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven

  19. IV. An act of humility

  20. He came “unto John to be baptized of him.” Though John was a great man, he was inferior to Jesus

  21. Mk. 1:7 [7] And preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose

  22. Though not a sinner, Jesus was baptized along with sinners-Lk. 3:21 [21] Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,

  23. 1 Pet. 2:22 [22] Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:

  24. Acts 10:34-35 [34] Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:[35] But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.

  25. V. A prayerful act

  26. “Jesus also having been baptized, and praying.” (ASV) This is the first mention of Jesus praying People who are baptized should pray It is baptism into Christ, then prayer

  27. Jn. 9:31 [31] Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.

  28. Lk. 11:1 [1] And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.

  29. Acts 22:16 [16] And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord

  30. VI. An act divinely approved

  31. 1. “The heavens were open” Mk. 1:10 [10] And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him:

  32. When Christ died on the cross – God’s great plan of salvation was opened to sinful man

  33. 1 Cor. 15:1-4 • [1] Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;[2] By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.

  34. [3] For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;[4] And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

  35. Eph. 1:3 [3] Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ

  36. 2. The Spirit descended Is. 11:2 [2] And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;

  37. Is. 61:1 [1] The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;

  38. Acts 10:38 [38] How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

  39. 3. The Father spoke “Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.” This is the Father’s first recorded word to the Son

  40. Here on the banks of the Jordan, we have the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, into whose names we are baptized

  41. Mt. 28:19 [19] Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

  42. Have you been baptized into Christ? 2 Cor. 6:2 ---[2] (For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)
