The Disciple’s Prayer Mt. 6:9-15
This prayer “is sort of blueprint for prayer which New Testament- saints did not follow to the letter in any case on record”. (Gus Nichols)
Mt. 6:9 [9] After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
1. “Our Father which art in heaven” Only those who believe in Christ and are baptized into Him can address God as Father
Gal. 3:26-28 [26] For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.[27] For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.[28] There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
1 Pet. 1:23 [23] Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
2. “Hallowed by thy name” Hallow = means holy, sacred, and reverend Shows the respect and reverence that is due the Father
Ps. 111:9 [9] He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant for ever: holy and reverend is his name.
Ps. 89:7 [7] God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all them that are about him.
Heb. 12:28-29 [28] Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:[29] For our God is a consuming fire.
“It marks one an awful sinner to take God’s name in vain.” Exodus 20:7 [7] Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
Mt. 6:10 [10] Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
3. “Thy Kingdom Come” The kingdom had not then come, but it did come on Pentecost of Acts 2 Then the kingdom was athand
Mt. 3:2 [2] And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
Mt. 16:18 [18] And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
Acts 2:47 [47] Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.
4. “Thy Will be done on earth as it is in heaven” This is the way Jesus prayed Lk. 22:42 [42] Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.
If we pray for His will to be done – then we should follow His will by faithful obedience
Lk. 6:46 [46] And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
Mt. 6:11 [11] Give us this day our daily bread.
“Give us this day our daily bread.” Bread = stands for food in general Give us = shows that we depend upon God for our needs
Js. 1:17 [17] Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
We must “Pray for bread, and then meet the conditions – go to work.” (G. Nichols)
2 Th. 3:10-12 [10] For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.[11] For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies.
[12] Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.
Daily bread = God teaches us to take life one day at a time Many problems can be solved if we focus on “today” and not yesterday or tomorrow
Mt. 6:34 34 Be not therefore anxious for the morrow: for the morrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. (ASV)
Js. 4:14-15 14 whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. What is your life? For ye are a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. 15 For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall both live, and do this or that.
Mt. 6:12 [12] And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
Lk.11:4 [4] And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us.
Mt. 6:14-15 [14] For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:[15] But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses
Forgive us our trespasses – as we forgive We mustforgive others in order to be forgiven
Mk. 11:25 25 “And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses (NKJV)
We (Christians) need forgiveness – we are not sinlessly perfect 1 Jn. 1:8,10 [8] If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.[10] If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
The sinner who wants to be saved must: Hear the word of God Believe Repent of sins Confess faith in Christ Be baptized for remission of sins
Mt. 6:13 [13] And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
“Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil” God doesnot tempt man to do evil!
Js. 1:13-14 13] Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:[14] But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
When we are tempted God provides a way of escape We must avoid temptation “Don’t pitch your tent toward Sodom as Lot did”
1 Th. 5:22 [22] Abstain from all appearance of evil.
Trust to be delivered 2 Tim. 4:18 [4] And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us.
