AFROTC Language Programs High School Scholarship Program FY08 • High school seniors (meet central board) • 57 Foreign Language (FL) scholarships awarded • Scholarships activate each fall • All non-tech majors must take at least 12sh of FL In-college Scholarship Program FY08 • Eligible full-time college students • 18 FL express scholarships awarded (77 total) • Awarded/activated throughout the academic year

FL Program Incentives Foreign Language Express Scholarship Program • Immediate activation, no central board • Includes some area studies majors Study Abroad (AFROTC’s approval required) • Limited to one term • Scholarship and Stipend continues (if on scholarship) • NO funds for travel / room & board FY09 National Defense Authorization Act • Foreign Language Incentive Pay • Cadets successfully completing FL course can receive up to $3,000 annually

  4. Foreign Languages • Immediate Investment: Arabic Chinese (Mandarin) Persian Farsi Persian Dari French* Hindi Indonesian Japanese • Strategic Stronghold: Azerbaijani Cambodian Hausa Kazakh Kurdish Malay Serbo-Croatian Swahili

Foreign Languages Cont. • Immediate Investment: Korean Pashtu Portuguese (Brazilian) * Punjabi Russian Spanish (Latin America)* Turkish Urdu/Punjabi • Strategic Stronghold: • Tagalog * • Thai • Uighur • Uzbek • Vietnamese * Language in which the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness has determined there is sufficient strategic capability.
