  2. What is indirect statement? Direct statement: The girl loves the boy. Indirect statement: The friend says the girl loves the boy.

  3. Indirect statement formation • Look for verbs of saying, thinking, perceiving, informing, remembering, etc. • She said that… dico, nuntio, nego • She thought that… existimo, puto,credo • He saw that… video, cerno, sentio • He knew that… nesco, scio • She wrote that… scribo, moneo

  4. Indirect statement formation • Main verb of saying, thinking, etc. • Subject of the indirect statement goes into the accusative case • Verb of the indirect statement goes into the infinitive The boy says the girl loves him.

  5. Verb tenses • The tenses of the main verbs are absolute tenses- they refer to real time, can be any of the six tenses • The tenses of the infinitives are relative tenses- they tell when the action happened relative to the main verb • same time as main verb • Before the main verb • After the main verb

  6. Present infinitive • Action happens at the same time as the main verb = present infinitive The boy says the girl loves him. Puerpuellamamareillumdicit. The boy said the girl loved him. Puerpuellamamareillum dixit.

  7. Perfect infinitive • Action happens before the time of the main verb = perfect infinitive The boy says the girl loved him. Puerpuellamamavisseillumdicit. The boy says the girl had loved him. Puerpuellamamavisseillum dixit.

  8. Future infinitive • Action happens after the action of the main verb = future infinitive The boy says the girl will love him. Puerpuellamamaturamessedicit. The boy said the girl would love him. Puerpuellamamaturamesse dixit.
