Objectives for this session: My hope is that by the end of this session you will have an understanding of: How we will work together (PD strands and teams) What we will work towards (Proposed goals/ focus areas) How the new teacher evaluation process can support our work.
Making Sense of 2012-2013 Charting a Course Forward Essential Question: How do we continue to develop a collaborative learning community rooted in strong communication to advance global awareness and high academic achievement?
Whatwill we work on? Proposed SWG 1: We will collaboratively examine and implement rigorous curriculum and assessment practices that are aligned with the Common Core Standards and the International Baccalaureate Core Requirements in order to advance global awareness and increase academic achievement.
Whatwill we work on? We will work collaboratively to examine and implement instructional practices that engage all students and that are personalized to accommodate diverse learning styles, needs, interests and levels of readiness, including those of students with disabilities and English learners in order to advance global awareness and increase academic achievement. 5 Strands of Professional Development • Insourcing our Growth • 1) PD Partner and Observations • Who: all teachers and counselors in content partners • This strand focuses on our work as content teachers. We will work with self-selected PD partners or trios from our content teams to explore questions of practicearound our school wide goal # 1. • By sharing or even co-constructing our professional practice goals we and support one another in pursuit of our mission. We will also have the opportunity once per semester to observe one another ‘s practice in the classroom to deepen understanding of one another’s work and provide non-evaluative feedback.
5 Strands of Professional Development • Insourcing our Growth • 2) Cluster Meetings • Who: all teachers and counselors in grade level cluster teams • This strand focuses on our work in our grade levels. Teams will shape goals mapped back to our school-wide goal #2.
5 Strands of Professional Development • Insourcing our Growth • 3) Spotlights (2 spotlights per semester) • Who: 4 volunteers, shared school-wide • This strand allows us to share successful practices or problems of practice with the entire faculty. This time provides the opportunity for discussion and exploration of our understanding of powerful learning. TWO OPTIONS 1) Teachers share, through mini teaching sessions, successful strategies and tools mapped back to one of our school-wide goals. OR 2) Teachers share, though a consultancy protocol, a problem of practice to solicit feedback from the community. Follow up discussions promote interdisciplinary connections. 5 Strands of Professional Development • Insourcing our Growth • 4) Professional Articles • Articles: Throughout the year we will look beyond the expertise in our classroom and collectively examine and discuss effective practices from a range of educational articles • . – Sprinkles of inspiration and provocation. Please share suggested articles with Ms. Livermore and cc Ms. Battersby.
5 Strands of Professional Development • 5) Focus Session: • This reserved session allows us to look beyond our school for expertise in a specific area if the ILT determines prudent.

BPS’ Hopes for the New Educator Evaluation System • It will improve student learning and growth in Boston Public Schools • It will set a high bar for professional teaching status • It will give teachersa stronger voice in evaluation processes • It will recognize excellence in teaching and leading • It will increase conversation about knowledge of, and practice of, effective teaching in schools.
