Henry uses indirect characterization in depicting Miss Fairchild in “Hearts and Hands.” The text claims,“When she spoke her voice, full, sweet, and deliberate, proclaimed that its owner was accustomed to speak and be heard.” Here, the reader can infer that Miss Fairchild is respected since she is used to being listened to when she speaks. Typically one in “elegant” apparel usually has a higher social status and is affluent. Evidently, O.
