  3. Objective • I can explain the causes and effects of the Civil War

  4. English Civil War • 1641-1651 • King Charles I and Parliament had been disagreeing on who should have the most power. • In 1628, Parliament passed the “Petition of Right”. This limited the king’s ability to tax, imprison citizens, quarter troops, and institute martial law.

  5. Religion • Puritans- Protestants in England, did not like the Church of England which the King supported. • When King Charles began to impose more of the Church of England, many Puritans left for America. • Puritans had formed an important of the House of Commons, the lower house of Parliament.

Oliver Cromwell • Military genius who helped the Roundheads win the war. • Led the New Model Army • Purged Parliament of any members who didn’t support him. • Executed Charles I. • Declared England a commonwealth (representative government) • Later set up a military dictatorship This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-NC-ND

Laptop Rules • No food or drink on your desk or anywhere near the laptops. • No phones or other devices may be plugged into the laptops. • Any violation of these rules will result in loss of laptop privilege for the class. • Alternative assignments will be given for those who choose not to cooperate.

  9. Activity Rules • May work with a partner behind you or beside you. • Must write on your own paper. • Talking too loudly or being off task will result in working alone or an alternate assignment. • If you finish early, you may work on the graphic organizer.

  10. Effects • Puritans went to America for more religious freedom. • Passing of English Bill of Rights which required Parliament and the King to work together. • Allowed Puritans the right of free public worship.
