Project Overview *Students will work together to understand and model our school-wide expectations: Be SAFE, Be RESPECTFUL Be RESPONSIBLE, and Be a PEACEMAKER Our class has been asked to enter a photo competition displaying these expectations! * Students will establish classroom routines, schedules, tools and our calendar.

Reading Skills Story Structure Characters and Setting David’s New Friends Materials Needed Treasures Book Comprehension Papers Noise Level 1 • Listen to Leaders read task list. • Gather all materials. • Open to page 15 in your Treasures book. • Taking turns with your group members, read aloud David’s New Friends with your group. • When you have finished the story, work together to fill out the Character and Setting Chart with your group. • Turn the chart into the Turn In File with all group members’ names. Extension Activity: Read Charlotte’s Web and complete the character analysis. Project Connection Class Expectations Hopes and Dreams What will happen if… I don’t get it. I didn’t finish. Skills Write a Personal Narrative Writing1st Day of School • Materials Needed • Writing Journal • Graphic Organizer • Pencil Noise Level 1 • Listen to Leaders read task list. • Gather all materials. • Think back to your first day of second grade (yesterday). • Use the graphic organizer to write down short statements about what happened at the beginning, middle and end of the day. • Next, use your ideas to write about your day in your writing journal. • Be sure to write your name and date at the top of your page. • Finally, share your writing with a partner in your group for feedback. Self-Selected Reading / Accelerated Reader Skills Reading fluency and comprehension SSR and AR points Noise Level 0 • Choose a library book or a book of choice that you have not read. • Be sure you picked a book that you can read alone. • Silently read . • After you finish your book, write the name of the book in your Data Binder. • Be sure to fill in the information about your book in your binder. • If you can answer all the questions in your Data Binder, get your laptop and log on to AR to take your test. • Record your AR score in your Data Binder. . • Materials Needed • Data binder • Book of choice • Computer What will happen if… I don’t get it. Working with Words Skills Short i and short a sounds Word meaning Noise Level 1 • Listen to Leaders read task list. • Review the vocabulary and spelling words for the week. • Complete Working with Words Activities with your group on pages: Page 1- Where’s the Word? Page 2 – Spell to the Finish • Complete the practice page and turn it in to the Spelling File. Math Journal Skills Number Sequencing Counting Coins Calendars Telling time to 15 minutes Noise Level 1 • Listen to Leaders read task list. • Gather all materials. • Using the counters and number line, complete page 1 in your math journal on number sequences. • Using the coins provided, complete page 2 in your math journal on counting coins. • On page 159 in your Math Journal, fill in the money table. • Complete the calendar on page 3 for August. • Draw the correct times on the clocks on page 4 in your Math Journal. Extension Activity: Look in the math and Reading text consider what mini lesson might need to be taught prior to implementing this station.
