  2. DEFINITION OF A WATCH • Watch: Any period of time during which an individual is assigned specific, detailed responsibilities on a recurring basis.

  3. DEFINITION OF WATCH OFFICER A commissioned or warrant officer regularly assigned to duty in charge of a watch or portion of a watch.

  4. Duty Watch • Duty watch will still be held at Noyes Street Unit from 1900 to 2200, Sunday through Thursday.

  5. Modifications to Duty Watch Procedures • Midshipmen are now responsible for a duty binder and bag • Duty binder and bag are stowed in gear locker of Haven St Unit • Duty bag contains : • 1 black pen and writing material • 1 working flashlight • Copy of Duty Watch order • Current copy of staff and unit recall lists • Duty keys

Modifications to Duty Watch Procedures, cont’d. • Midshipmen now responsible for inspecting spaces and ensuring spaces are clean and secured. • Periodic security checks of the unit and grounds during the watch will be conducted. • At a minimum, a check will be conducted every hour beginning at 1900. • Discrepancies will be logged and brought to the attention of the Battalion Executive Officer. • Will be responsible for maintaining accurate records by signing off on the provided checklist, for review by the Battalion Executive Officer

Modifications to Duty Watch Procedures, cont’d. • Notifying the next Duty Midshipman • Will also ensure the oncoming Duty Midshipman is fully briefed and aware of all orders and duties pertaining to the watch • Cell phones while on duty • Duty midshipmen will have their personal cell phone on them at all times both during and outside of normal working hours. • Telephone communication must be maintained at all times.

Modifications to Duty Watch Procedures, cont’d. • Emergency procedures • Watch stander will notify the Battalion Commander via personal cell phone for any incident or emergency occurring at the unit or affecting any unit member. • Examples of when to call: any incident where local law enforcement or fire personnel are called to the unit. • When in doubt, call the Battalion Executive officer!

THE WATCH LOG/LOGBOOK • A complete chronological log maintained to ensure an accurate permanent record of the command's activities. • Used to record every circumstance of importance or interest that concerns the crew or unit and the operation and safety of the ship/station. • Can be used as evidence before courts and other legal bodies

LOG ENTRY PROCEDURES • Log entries are entered with ball-point pen in black ink. • Entries are made in legible capital block letters. • All entries must be complete and accurate, written in standard naval language. • Log must be signed when assuming the watch and turning over the watch • Entries made every hour on the hour • Aside from the standard procedures, all personnel onboard at time of watch stander’s arrival or departure, or all personnel that arrive at or depart from the unit during the watch, will now be noted.

SAMPLE DUTY MIDSHIPMAN LOGBOOK ENTRIES Date: 29 OCT 2006 BatCom: MIDN Nguyen BatXO: MIDN Dmochowski Duty Midshipman: MIDN 2/C Smitty 1900 I, MIDN Smitty, have assumed all duties and responsibilities as NROTC Northwestern University Duty Midshipman. I have in my possession (1) one duty bag containing: (1) Midshipman duty binder, (1) Midshipman duty logbook, (1) black pen, (1) notepad, (1) working flashlight, (1) copy of the staff and unit recall roster, and (1) duty key ring containing (2) keys. All is secure and there is nothing unusual to report at this time. MIDN Schmuckatelly currently on deck. (Sign and date). 2000 MIDN Duty off to tour area. INITIALS 2010 MIDN duty returns from touring area. All is secure and there is nothing unusual to report at this time. (State deficiencies if any). INITIALS 2100 MIDN Duty off to tour area. INITIALS 2110 MIDN Duty returns from touring area, All is secure and there is nothing unusual to report at this time. (State deficiencies if any). INITIALS 2115 MIDN Duty notified (insert name here) of his/her Duty Watch for tomorrow. INITIALS 2200 I, MIDN Smitty, stand relieved of all duties and responsibilities as the NROTC Northwestern University Duty Midhsipman. All is secure and there is nothing unusual to report at this time. MIDN Schuckatelly remains on deck at this time.
