Broad Research Questions • Are any North Carolina school systems retaining new hires for four or more years at a rate of 66.7% or better? • If so, what practice are these systems using to retain these teachers?
Data Framework • New teacher hiresretention by North Carolina school systems • Hiring years of teachers: 1995-2004 • Data were divided into three categories
Data Categories • Three Categories • Teachers with no experience [primarily those through a traditional teacher preparation program] • Teachers with experience [experience somewhere in the nation] • Teachers who were hired as lateral entry
Analysis Decisions Systems were identified that kept 2/3 of their new teacher hires that began a 2nd year in each category Systems were identified that kept new teacher hires that began a 5th year with that system Systems were identified that kept new teacher hires for 3 of the 4 yearscontinuously at a rate of 66.7% or greater
What was discovered from the Data? • Out of the 115 North Carolina School Systems: • 71 systems kept new hires with no experience for a second year • 43 systems kept new hires with experience for a second year • 20 systems kept new hires with lateral entry licensure for a second year
You Predict…… • Predict how many of the school systems kept these new hires for the 4th year
New Hires Retention at the end of 4th Year: No Experience • Out of the 71 systems that kept new hires with no experience for a 2nd year, 5 systems retained those original new hires with no experience at a rate of 66.7% at the end of their four years
New Hires Retention at the end of 4th Year : Teachers with Experience • Out of the 43 systems that kept new hires with experience for a second year, 3 systems retained these original new hires with experience at the end of their 4th year
New Hires Retention at the end of 4th Year : Lateral Entry New Hires • Out of the 20 systems that kept lateral entry new hires for a second year, 1 system retained these original new hires with a lateral entry license at a rate of 66.7% rate at the end of their 4th year.
Combining Categories Data • There were 8 North Carolina school systems that kept all three categories of teachers at a rate of 66.7% or greater for a second year.

Retention Relationships among the Eight Systems • There were no retention relationships among the eight systems based on: • Teacher stipends • School violence • School size • Location

3rd Year Retention • No school system in North Carolina retained new teacher hires in all three categories at rate of 66.7% or greater at the end of the 3rd year.
