Chapter 6 Discussion
One of the terms you’re likely to find on exams and essay prompts is to discuss.
What Teachers mean by discuss • By discussing, we generally mean reviewing and presenting all of the evidence on a topic before making a decision about which position is the most correct.
Writing Discussion Essays • The first paragraph should introduce the subject and acknowledge it’s complexity • By nature, any topic that you have been given to “discuss” will be complex and multi-faceted. • The next paragraph(s) should contain background • The remainder of the essay should follow that of an argument
Possible Structures Block • Intro • Background • Opposition • Writer’s argument • conclusion • Intro • Background • Argument 1 • Opposition • Writer’s argument • Argument 2 • Opposition • Writer’s argument • Argument… • Conclusion Point by Point
Activity • Let’s go back to our class activity from a couple of weeks ago, in which your groups put together short arguments for the better super hero.
Spiderman won the class debate. • In small groups, go back to the original groups, and discuss, thinking about what we’ve talked about for discussion, who really makes the better superhero. • Based on the structure we’ve looked at today, put together an outline for an essay, if you were to write one, discussing the merits of being a superhero/who would be the better superhero.
Peer Review Please complete the peer review worksheet. You may leave when you’re finished. Please make sure you give me a copy of your essay so I can give you feedback.
