  6. Mini Lesson • Noun-A word that names a person, a place, a thing, or an idea • Example: Governor Smith, Oregon, hospital, religion

  7. Mini Lesson • Pronoun-A word used in place of a noun. The word that a pronoun replaces is called its antecedent. • Example: I, you, she, him, who, everyone, these, neither theirs, themselves, which

  8. Mini Lesson • Verb-A word that expresses action or state of being • Action Verbs – words that show something what the subject of the sentence could mentally or physically do. Examples-float, sniff, discover, seem, run, Linking Verbs – words that show a state of being Examples – is, are, was, were, be, being

  9. Mini Lesson • Adjective-A word that modifies a noun or a pronoun. • Modify = add more meaning or give a better description • Example-young, big, grim, Canadian, fast,

  10. Mini Lesson • Adverb-A word that modifies a verb. • Many times an adverb will end in -ly • Example-briefly, forward, regally, slowly

  12. Writing Workshop • Character Sketch Brainstorming • Step #1: • Pick 2 Non-fiction characters (real people from your life) • Pick 2 Fictional characters (books, movies, video games, TV shows, etc)

  13. Writing Workshop For each of your 4 characters, you need to answer the following questions: 1. What traits does your character have that make them stand out from a crowd? 2. What makes that character vivid and interesting? 3. What are some flaws the character has that make them seem more human? 4. What qualities does the character have that you wish you had?

  14. Ticket Out Saturday was National Grouch Day. Describe a time in your life when you were the “grouchiest”. What caused you to be this way? How did you react? What made you eventually feel better?
