WHO WAS THE RULER OF THE NATION DURING THIS TIME PERIOD & WHAT IMPACT DID HE HAVE ON THE NATION DURING THIS TIME PERIOD? • King Alfred Reigned from 871-899 • The Irish and continental missionaries converted Anglo-Saxon kings to Christianity and introduced it to his people • Christianity provided a common faith and a common system of morality and right to conduct; it also linked England to Europe • With the help of Christianity , he unified and led the Anglo-Saxons against the Danes defending their church, people, and their culture • Ethelfda (a brilliant military Leader and strategist) and her brother Edward , carried on his battle against the Danes
Characteristics of the time period! • They lived in Sutton Hoo in Suffolk, England • Their society developed from kinship groups led by a strong chief • They all show loyal dependency to the king • They tend to live close to their animals in single-family homesteads, wooden buildings that surround a communal court or a warm, fire-lit chieftain's hall • The cluster of buildings was protected by a wooden stockade fence and the arrangement contributed to a sense of security and to the close relationship between leader and followers: this encouraged the tendency to participate in community discussion and rule by consents • The people formed, maintained local governments, and created fine crafts, especially metalwork
What historical events took place during this time period? • King Alfred of Wessex reigned 877-899 • King Alfred led Anglo-Saxons against invading the Danes. • The Danes took over Northeast and Central England. • Christianity was introduced when King Alfred converted.
What changes were made in the development of the English language during this time period? • Latin remained the language of serious study. • English had started to gain respect as a language of culture, only old English stories and poetry preserved by monks came to be recognized as great works of literature. • Beowulf is the first great work of the English National literature.

What type of Literature was primarily produced during this Era ? Anglo-Saxons believed everything natural was controlled by Spirits or Gods Most stories told were about warriors , heroes , and spiritual warriors (Thor , and Odin for example) Literature was produced from telling stories about their God’s. We get the days of the week from their God’s names. • Thunar was a deity, essentially the same as Thor. Norse God of thunder and lightning. Thursday= Thor’s Day • The most important Norse God was Odin, the God of death, poetry, and magic. Anglo-Saxon’s name for Odin was Woden. Wednesday= Woden’s day Thunar/ Thor woden

What influence did other nations have on the country during this era? Why? How? • Ireland while isolated from Germanic invasion Experienced a golden age. • Irish monks founded monasteries that became sanctuaries of learning for refugee scholars from England. • Then, in 432, the whole of Celtic Ireland was converted to Christianity by a Romanized Briton named Patricius.
