Who were they? • Anglo Saxons moved to Great Britain from the Angeln and the Saxony regions of Germany. • They moved after the fall of the Roman Empire. • They were invaded by the Vikings.
Men’s clothing attire • The general men’s attire included a short cloak or cape made of fur. Historians do not believe that Anglo-Saxons went naked under their cloaks. The insides seemed to have fur sides inwards and skin sides outward; secured by some sort of lacing. Another type of cloak that was common was short cloth cloaks that were not tailored but consisted of a square of clothing that was clasped at one shoulder. (Generally the right shoulder)
Women’s Attire • Women in this time period wore a lot of jewelry that was used to determine a woman’s status. The woman generally wore a “peplos” dress. It was a tubular garment that clasped at the shoulders by a pair of brooches. There were traces of longer dresses on the women and it is believed that they top of the dress would be folded over to become some type of cape. Also; it was thought the dress would have to be heavily bloused over a girdle.
Comparison Growing up in Anglo-Saxon Girls Boys • In this culture; girls and boys were thought of as equally important. A girl’s life centered around the home while they learned housekeeping skills like weaving, cooking, making cheese, and brewing ale. Boys and girls worked together to get firewood or get water. Not many girls learned how to read or write and many of them were married off by the age of ten. At the age of ten; girls were considered adults. Some girls chose to enter the nun service in the Christian Church. • As a boy in the Anglo-Saxon culture, they learned the skills of their father. They were taught how to use an axe, to plough a field and how to use an axe in case of a battle. They also went fishing, collected food to eat, and hunted deer with the men. Not many boys learned how to read and write due to the fact that the only schools were run in monasteries. When a boy joined one; he was going to start training to become a monk.
