Worldview: Beliefs • Pagan: • 1) one of a people or community observing a polytheistic religion (ancient Romans or Greeks); • 2) a person who is not a Christian, Jew, or Muslim; • 3) an irreligious or hedonistic person; (believes that pleasure is the most important thing in life) • 4) worshipper of false gods.
Worldview: Beliefs • Fate (wyrd) and Predestination • Life is predetermined including the manner of death
Worldview: Values of a Warrior Society • Hierarchical structure • Lord • Protected and rewarded thanes for their military services • Thane • Warrior who fought for a certain lord in return for land • Defended the lord and fought in his wars • The relationship between lord and thane was based on mutual respect, trust and need.
Worldview: Warrior Society WERGILD = MANPRICE • Different levels of society were assigned a monetary value • A lord was worth more money than a thane; a thane was worth more money than a freeman who was in turn worth more than a serf.
Worldview: Warrior Society WERGILD = MANPRICE • If a kinsman (family member) was killed, a man had the duty to do one of two things: • retrieve the wergild • kill the slayer
Saxon Moral Code: Governed how people behaved • Courage and selflessness • Truth • Honor • Fidelity • Discipline and Duty • Hospitality • Industriousness • Self-Reliance • Perseverance
Worldview: Warrior SocietyA Heroic Way of Life • greatest honor was to die bravely in battle • boasting = a vow of future courage • pagan immortality • A warrior achieved immortality through a brave death that would be talked about and remembered for all time.
