Formation of New Jersey • New Jersey was named in 1664 • Named In honor of Sir George Carteret, who had been governor of the Isle of Jersey • Under the jurisdiction of the Dutch
Inhabitants, Motivation, and Method of Populating • Population in 1670 (beginning of colony) was around 1,000 inhabitants. In 1780 was around 139.6 thousand. • People moved to New Jersey because : • religious freedom • and the proprietors (Lord John Berkeley and Sir Gorge Carteret) offered large tracts of land which was ideal for growing cash crops • a trial by jury • and a representative assembly that would make local laws and set tax rates.
Structure of Society • Political: it was a royal colony with a governor appointed by the king • Slaves (12% of NJ population) • Prior to 1750 • a. Small Upper-class: • . Aristocratic plantation owners in South dominated wealth and influence • ii. Merchants, lawyers, officials, and clergymen dominated the North • b. Yeoman farmers constituted the majority of the population owned land • c. Small merchants, manual workers, and hired hands: many did not own land • d. Indentured servants and jailbirds: limited to no influence
Environmental Factors • Poor soil made it harder to grow • Cold winters and mild summers • Short growing season
Agriculture • They practiced small-scale agriculture such as growing corn and pole beans together and squash. • They were hunting and gathering, hunting with bow and arrow, using deadfall traps, and snares. • They also gathered nuts in the autumn such as acorns hickory nuts, walnuts, butternuts, beech nuts and chestnuts
Industry • Manufacturing • Iron plantations • Lumbering • Land Industries • Big on industry to help economy since growing season is shorten by weather.
Important People • King Charles II- gave land to his brother, James, Duke of York. • In 1664, James, the Duke of York, received control of New Netherland. • He granted land to two of his friends, Lord Berkeley and Sir George Carteret, that would become New Jersey. • Lord Berkeley and Sir George Carteret - The two advertised and promised settlers many benefits for colonizing including representative government and freedom of religion
