  6. A scale score ranging from 100 to 400 was generated for each of the four content areas: Mathematics, Science, Reading Across the Disciplines, and Writing Across the Disciplines. For each content area, scale scores are based on the raw scores (i.e., number of points earned). These raw scores are transformed into scale scores in order to ensure accurate comparisons of student performance across different forms within the same generation of the test by adjusting for slight differences in difficulty among test forms. Established psychometric procedures are used to ensure that a given scale score represents the same level of performance regardless of the form of the test. For example, if one student receives a scale score of 270 on one form of the Mathematics test administered in a given year and another student earns a 270 on another form of the Mathematics test administered in a later year, the scaling process ensures that both scores represent the same level of performance. Therefore, scale scores are especially helpful for comparing the performance of different groups of students from year to year while maintaining the same performance standard across the years. The scale scores can be associated with a performance level (i.e., below basic, basic, proficient, goal, and advanced) by using the CAPT Third Generation Standards table (located in Appendix A). Other tests for which year to year comparisons are important, such as the SAT, also employ a similar practice of reporting scale scores.

  9. Calculator Use Policy Each student must have or be provided with a calculator for the entire CAPT Mathematics test. Students may use any calculator provided to them or any calculator of their choosing, including those with limited text entry capabilities such as some scientific and graphing calculators. A Personal Digital Assistant such as a Palm PilotTM, cell phone, or any device with text messaging capability may not be used.
