Radio Frequency Identification Technology Presented by Borna A. Oriko, RN
Objectives • Define RFID. • Describe and evaluate the Hardware. • Describe and evaluate the software. • Describe the information systems used • Identify advantages of RFID • Identify disadvantages of RFID
Objectives Continued • Discuss ethical and legal issues related to RFID • Identify Professional Nurse Informatics Competencies Required • Identify functions and responsibilities of Informatics Nurse
What is RFID? • Radio frequency identification (RFID) “a generic term that is used to describe system that transmits the identity (in the form of a unique serial number) of an object or person wirelessly, using radio waves”. (“what is RFID?” n.d.).
Concept store information on a microchip. Attach the microchip onto an antenna. The chip and antenna together are called RFID transponders or RFID tags. The antenna enables the chip to transmit to a reader. The reader converts the radio waves into digital information on computers. Active, passive and semi tags. How Does it work?
RFID Hardware • Readers • Tags • Antenna • Printers • Scanners • Data Accumulator
RFID Reader • The Reader also known as a transceiver or an interrogator. • Emits electronic signals to the RFID tags. • Signal uses radio waves. • Reader signals the Tag, reads and retrieves the stored data on the Tag. • Stored data sent to the Data Accumulator. • Links the Tag and the Data Accumulator.
RFID Software • Item identification software: • 3M RFID Tracking system software. • Easy Label • Location identification software: • Locate ware • File tracking software • Data transfer software: • Wise track • IntelliTrack data management software
Locate Ware • A location identification software. • used for tracking items, people or animals. • A middleware that is cost effective, easy to setup and configure. • Reports real-time location of people, animals and things. • Reduces search time. • No line of sight required (GAO RFID Inc, 2009)
Usability of Locate Ware • Simplicity of use • Simplicity of learning • User satisfaction • Efficiency of software use • Error tolerance • Fit of system to task
Communication system • Real time location of staff, patient and equipment • Nurse call system • Real time data analysis • Real time feedback • Automatic update of Medical records • Cost effective
Core Business system • ADT system: admitting, discharge and transfer. • Financial system • Acuity system • Scheduling system • Quality control • Resource Allocation ( McGonigle & Mastrian, 2009)
Advantages of RFID • No line of sight required. • Increased patient safety and satisfaction. • Improved Information flow and data integrity. • Visibility and accountability at every point of service. • Automated, low labor cost. • Staff and patient location.
Disadvantages of RFID • Cost. • Security and Privacy concerns. • Lack of industry standards. • Interference with medical equipment. • Large amounts of data. • Environmental conditions.
Ethical and Legal issues • HIPPA. • Regulation. • Privacy. • Hardware and software vendor regulation. • Compliance. • Data Security.
Nurse Informatics Competencies • Basic computer technology skills. • Ability to use web browser. • Ability to monitor wireless network. • Ability to perform network data back up. • Data management. • Ability to set up user accounts.
Functions and Responsibilities of Informatics' Nurse • Decision Support. • Patient advocate. • Educator. • Project manager. • Consultant. • System Specialist. ( McGonigle & Mastrian, 2009)
Radio Frequency Identification is wireless. Reduces ER wait times, monitors infection control and quality compliance. Tracks employees, patients and Inventory. Reduces cost by allowing real time data analysis. Fast and reliable with no user input. Improves overall patient, employees and management satisfaction. Summary
