  1. Using GPS Data to Explore Plate Tectonics and other phenomena! An overview of what we’re doing today in the workshop and A short introduction to UNAVCO & EarthScope Susan Eriksson UNAVCO Boulder, CO Mayagüez, Puerto Rico

  2. Today Why we all are here today • Share UNAVCO as a resource • Learn about exciting science: Current GPS research and discoveries • For you! • Provide educational materials • Think about how to add to your teaching Materials are available at: http://www.unavco.org:8080/cws/learn/puertoricoworkshop/

  3. Today’s Activities • Explore concepts & relationships with visualization tools: • Visualizing relationships between earthquakes, volcanoes, and plate boundaries using EarthScope Jr. • Investigate plate tectonics of other areas: • What’s Happening Here? A tour around the world using GPS data • Digging deeper: Examine evidence through data products. • Exploring Plate Motion and Deformation in California Using GPS Time Series

  4. Course Outcomes Participants will be able to • Describe • why scientists are investigating the geophysics of Puerto Rico and surrounding area, • how the geology relates to hazards of the area, and • how technology of space geodesy helps us understand the Earth. • Discuss high-precision GPS and its application to plate tectonics, volcanoes, and earthquakes, • Interpret GPS time series plots to determine regional plate velocity • Access resources to support classroom implementation, • Implement these resources in a your classroom

  5. 21st Century Science • Integrating research and education • What is the cutting edge research in crustal deformation • How is it done • What new discoveries are being made • Nature of science • Engaging students with Earth system data • Quantitative skills • Visualization of data • Models – what are they, how do we develop • Integration of data • Careers in geosciences

  6. 21st Century Science • Integrating research and education • What is the cutting edge research in crustal deformation • How is it done • What new discoveries are being made • Nature of science • Engaging students with Earth system data • Quantitative skills • Visualization of data • Models – what are they, how do we develop • Integration of data • Careers in geosciences ….and relevance to society

  7. Getting students beyond…

  8. Think About… Instructional Approaches … Lecture w/ Discussion and/or questions (clickers) Students need: • Varied instructional approaches … • Varied learning styles • Varied modes of processing information (verbal, written, visual, kinesthetic, etc) • To learn how to think critically… Inquiry-base learning Guided activities Constructivist Lecture Passive Active Not to scale

  9. What is UNAVCO • NSF and NASA funded • Research Consortium • Membership-governed • Non-profit • Supports and promotes Earth science by advancing high-precision techniques (such as GPS) for the measurement and understanding of Earth deformation

  10. UNAVCO-supported science • Plate movement • Boundary zones • Transient deformation • Earthquakes and tectonics • Volcanoes and active magmatic systems • Glacial movements and isostatic adjustment • Hydrologic/seasonal changes

  11. Education and Outreach • Increase the understanding and public appreciation of geodynamics and earth deformation processes and their relevance to society. • Broaden the use of UNAVCO data and products by a wide audience of educational and research users. • Increase the diversity and broader participation in geoscience education and research. • Build a sustainable community of UNAVCO scientists and educators engaged in education and outreach. • Collaborate with other organizations to provide systemic impact on geoscience education.

  12. Professional Development Professional Development UNAVCO Short Course Series: Researchers at different levels Disseminating Knowledge: Teachers and Faculty UNAVCO Field Courses: Researchers and Students

  13. Enhancing Visibility & Impact UNAVCO E&O Website

  14. Learning Materials • Instructor Presentations • Computer instructions • Student worksheets • How to download the data

  20. EarthScope & Partners EarthScope is funded by the National Science Foundation and conducted in partnership with the US Geological Survey. EarthScope is being constructed, operated, and maintained as a collaborative effort with UNAVCO, IRIS, and Stanford University, with contributions from NASA and several other national and international organizations. The data collected by EarthScope’s three observatories will help us to understand processes that control earthquakes and volcanoes.

  21. Plate Boundary Observatory • A continent-scale network of GPS, borehole and laser strainmeters focusing on the extended plate boundary and extending into the continental interior • Measurements of • Extension/compression • Inflation and Deflation • Tilt

  22. GPS Stations

  23. Anatomy of a High-precision Permanent GPS Station GPS antenna inside of dome Monument solidly attached into the ground with braces. If the ground moves, the station moves. Solar panel for power Equipment enclosure • GPS receiver • Power/batteries • Communications/ radio/ modem • Data storage/ memory
