Subcutaneous Emphysema • Complicate a pneumomediastinum, pneumothorax or other perforated hollow viscus • Complication of chest tube drainage • Sequelae usually minor and self limiting, but potentially life threatening complications such as upper airway obstruction and acute respiratory failure had been reported • Interfere with other diagnostic modalities such as ultrasound, radiograph…

Discussion • Important factors in the association of chest tube drainage and subcutaneous emphysema: Inadequate placement, migration and blockage of chest tubes • Progressive or persistent subcutaneous emphysema also may develop if the gas supply of pneumothorax exceeds the chest tube evacuation capacity
