Description • Emphysema involves destruction of the lungs over time that causes Shortening of breath
Parts of Respiratory System • Affects Lungs, specifically elastic fibers around the alveoli
Cause of the Condition • Smoking, deficiency of an enzyme called alpha-1-antitrypsin, air pollution, airway reactivity, heredity
Specific Treatments • Emphysema is not a curable disease, once lung damage has occurred it cannot be reversed. The goal of treatment is to stop further lung destruction and preserve lung function.
Pharmacology • There is nothing to directly treat emphysema but because it is difficult to exhale, people with emphysema can use bronchodilators to open airways making it easier to breathe.
Stages of Emphysema • At-risk – normal breathing . Mild symptoms of at-risk emphysema include a chronic cough. • Mild emphysema - mild airflow limitation. Symptoms may include a chronic cough • Moderate emphysema - Worsening airflow limitation. The symptoms have increased. Shortness of breath usually develops when working hard, walking fast, or doing other brisk activity. At this stage of emphysema, a person usually seeks medical attention. • Severe emphysema - severe airflow limitation. A person is short of breath after just a little activity. In very severe emphysema, complications like respiratory failure or signs of right heart failure may develop. At this stage of emphysema, the quality of life is greatly impaired and the worsening symptoms may be life threatening.
Outcomes • People with emphysema usually end up eligible for Pneumonia (15%), Bleeding (2-5%), Stroke (1%), Heart attack (1%), and Death (3-8%)
