How often is the IWB used? Since 2007, the IWB has been used with … 1,200 students, 2,200 classes for about 1,800 hours. A 2009 study demonstrated significant gains in student learning when interactive, multimedia technologies were used to supplement science instruction (Beaudry, 2010). Lexia Learning Grant Of the five 2000 National Reading Panel recommendations, Lexia Learning supplements and supports four of the key components of literacy instruction that are found in effective learning environments. • Phonemic Awareness • Phonics • Vocabulary • Comprehension
Lexia Learning and Students… 1998 First Excellence in Education Lexia Grant Five Single Licenses Intensive Reading Literacy Support 2007 Excellence in Education Grant added 50 Licenses making literacy support available to all Kings Beach students. 2009-2010 Pilot programs extended Lexia Learning to Truckee and Tahoe Lake Schools The grant has served; • Over 700 students • With over 3,500 hours of literacy support • Lexia is now available in Truckee and at all lakeside elementary schools.
Average Cost of Lexia thus far… The cost of 1:1 or small group tutoring in the Tahoe area ranges from $25 to $50 dollars per hour. The rate at TTUSD for before and after-school small group reading intervention programs is 40$ per hour With one teacher, Lexia Learning labs provide supplementary instruction to 25-30 students at a time for: • $13.00 per student • $2.57 per hour The costs will continue to decline from year to year.
The Results In 2007-2008 Students receiving on average less than three hours of Lexia improved their performance on the State Star Language Arts Assessment by about 7 points. • Lexia Learning Lab students receiving an average of eight hours of literacy support increased their performance by 11 points. Future Directions… There are two likely directions for technology integration in school instruction: Hand-held devices that increase student access to communication and information tools.
