Getting Started • This course selection guide will walk you through selecting courses for your first semester here at NC State. • Using this guide, you will select your fall courses, including Biology, Chemistry, Math, and Life Science courses. Most students will take 15-16 total credit hours during fall semester. • This guide will NOT keep track of your course selections.You need to keep your own list. Use the Enrollment Check Sheet (included in the email with this enrollment guide) to record the courses you select. • Use the links at the bottom of each page or within the text of the slide to navigate through this guide.   3. Getting Started, cont. • Navigate all the way to the end, to the slide titled “Final Thoughts.” • Once you are (almost) done, you will be prompted to take a short survey. Completion of this survey is necessary to unlock class enrollment. You will not be able to enroll in classes until you complete the survey. The enrollment window for incoming first year students will open June 9th. • Please use the links at the bottom of each page oroptions within the text of the slide to navigate through the course selection guide.   4. Biology START • First, you will choose your biology course. • Do you have AP or transfer credit for Biology? Yes, I have AP or transfer credit for Biology. AP Biology test scores of 4 or 5 result in NC State credit for BIO 181 and BIO 183. If you have transfer credit from another institution, you can email LifeSciencesFY@ncsu.edu to check that your transcript has arrived and credit has been awarded.   5. Biology Option 1: Though you have credit, you may still wish to take BIO 181 or 183 (and lab) as a refresher. Option 2: Take a course that fulfills a General Education Program (GEP) requirement. Examples include psychology, anthropology, economics, literature, Africana studies, history, communications, etc. FYI courses, which have small class sizes, are a good option to consider. Option 3: Take ENG 101. This is a first-year requirement for all majors at NC State. • Option 4: Take a course specific to a discipline in which you are interested. Examples include: • PSY 200 Introduction to Psychology • GN 301 Genetics in Human Affairs • FS 201 Introduction to Food Science (especially for students interested in Nutrition) • PB 250 Plant Biology • BIO 212 Basic Human Anatomy & Physiology • BIO 250 Animal Anatomy & Physiology (especially for students interested in Zoology or Animal Science) • ANT 251 Physical Anthropology • Some of these will meet a GEP requirement and some will meet a major requirement. All of them can count toward graduation as a Free Elective. • If the course has BIO181 and/or 183 as a pre-requisite, contact the LSFY advisors to learn how to enroll. • If you have AP or transfer credit for BIO 181 and 183, you have several options (in no particular order): If you have questions, email the LSFY advisors at LifeSciencesFY@ncsu.edu to discuss classes appropriate for you. Biology • If you do not have AP or transfer credit for Biology, then you should take: • BIO 181 Introductory Biology: Ecology, Evolution, and Biodiversity (4 cr) • Chose the lecture with the corresponding lab that best fits your schedule.   8. chemistry • If you are interested in a Chemistry major or a research career in Biochemistry, you should enroll in a section of chemistry designated for chemistry students. • Enrollment in all chemistry courses is dependent on your NC State Chemistry Placement test score or AP Chemistry Exam.   10. chemistry • If you have an AP Chemistry score of 3, then you will receive credit for: • CH 101: Chemistry – A Quantitative Science • and CH 102: General Chemistry Laboratory • This is the first chemistry course (lecture and lab) in the sequence for Life Sciences majors. • Email the LSFY advisors at LifeSciencesFY@ncsu.edu to discuss your options for chemistry (or other) classes to take this fall. Chemistry • If you have an AP Chemistry score of 4 or 5, you have college credit for: • CH 101 and 102: General Chemistry and Lab, and • CH 201 and 202: Quantitative Chemistry and Lab • You have credit for all of the inorganic chemistry courses required for Life Sciences majors. • Email the LSFY advisors at lifesciencesfy@ncsu.edu to discuss your options for chemistry (or other classes) to take this fall. Chemistry • You will not be able to register for a Chemistry course until you take the NC State Chemistry Placement Test. • You should have received an email from the Life Sciences advisors to your NCSU email account providing instructions on how to take the test. • More information on the placement test can be found on the Department of Chemistry placement webpage.   14. chemistry • A score of 14 or lower on the NC State Chemistry Placement Test indicates that you must complete further study in chemistry prior to enrolling in CH 101 at NC State. We encourage you to complete this requirement in the summer, if possible.   15. chemistry • A score in the 15-18 range on the NC State Chemistry Placement Test indicates the need to improve your understanding of high school chemistry before enrolling in CH 101 at NC State. We have found that students who score in this range struggle more in this tough chemistry course and rarely are able to earn a strong grade in it.  We encourage you to consider the following options that will help you prepare for CH 101: • Successfully complete a series of self-guided modules (18 or better) available online: https://moodle-projects.wolfware.ncsu.edu/course/view.php?id=63 • Enroll in CH 111 Preparatory Chemistry at NC State either on campus or via distance education during a summer session. • Enroll in a preparatory chemistry course at another institution during the summer that will transfer to NC State as CH 111 -- Check Course Equivalency • Enroll in CH 111 Preparatory Chemistry at NC State during the fall semester. • After successfully completing any of the above, you will be able to take CH 101. • Email the LSFY advisors at LifeSciencesFY@ncsu.edu if you want to discuss your options. Upon completion of MA 241, with a grade of C- or better, you will receive credit for MA 141. • Score of 4 or 5: You have credit for MA 141 and may enroll in MA 241. • We encourage everyone to start with MA 141 to become familiar with Maple and other software programs used by our math department. Students are taught how to use Maple in MA 141. In MA 241, students are expected to have a working knowledge of these software programs.   20. math • You are interested in a higher level math AND took BC Calculus. Your score was: • Score of 2: You may take MA 241 (Calculus II). Upon completion of MA 241, with a grade of C- or better, you will receive credit for MA 141 (Calculus I). • Score of 3: You may enroll in MA 241, but confer with an advisor. • Score of 4 or 5: You have credit for MA 141 and 241. You may enroll in MA 242. • We encourage everyone to start with MA 141 to become familiar with Maple and other software programs used by our math department. Students are taught how to use Maple in MA 141. In MA 241, students are expected to have a working knowledge of these software programs. Upon completion of MA 231, with a grade of C- or better, you will receive credit for MA 131(Calculus for Life and Management Sciences A). Students with an AP score of 3 who enroll initially in MA 231 may have more difficulty with this class. We encourage you to start with MA 131, so you have an opportunity to become familiar with our instructors and with a college calculus course. • Score of 4 or 5: You may enroll in MA 231. Upon completion of MA 231, with a grade of C- or better, you will receive credit for MA 131 (Calculus for Life and Management Sciences A). Students with an AP score of 2 who enroll initially in MA 231 may have more difficulty with this class. We encourage you to start with MA 131, so you have an opportunity to become familiar with our instructors and with a college calculus course. • Score of 3: You should enroll in MA 231. You have credit for MA 131. • Score of 4 or 5: You have credit for MA 131 and 231; all of the required calculus courses for Life Science majors. Please email an LSFY advisor if you are interested in continuing on with additional math courses for a minor, or double major in math.   33. LSC START LSC 101: Critical and Creative Thinking in the Life Sciences (2 cr) LSC 101 is a required course for all Life Sciences curricula. It also meets 2 credit hours of GEP requirements. LSC 103 and options • All students entering the Life Science First Year curriculum are required to enroll in one course (1 cr) designed to facilitate the transition from high school to university, as well as the transition from LSFY to the major of their choice. (All NC State students have a similar requirement.) • Students interested in exploring one of the following majors should choose the corresponding “103” course: • Biochemistry BCH 103 • Microbiology MB 103 • Plant Biology PB 103 • Students interested in exploring a wider range of life sciences majors -- including Genetics, Nutrition Science, Zoology, and Biological Sciences -- should enroll in: • LSC 103 Return to BiologyReturn to ChemistryReturn to MathGo to HES next You are here: LSC 103

HES (formerly PE) • All NC State students are required to take one 100-level Health & Exercise Studies (HES) course and one additional HES course as part of the General Education Program at NC State. • You may take these courses in any order (i.e., it is not necessary to complete a 100-level HES course prior to taking a higher level HES course). • Many students choose to take their health courses for credit only. Health courses taken for credit only will still count towards your degree requirements. Please read this page for more information on the credit only policy at NC State, and contact an advisor if you still have questions regarding this policy. • Choose several HES courses, since the popular ones fill quickly. • HES courses in different categories have different course prefixes, but those listed below will meet the HES requirements.   36. enrolling • Using this guide, you should have selected courses that total 15-16 credit hours: • Biology (4 cr) • Chemistry (4 cr) • Math (3-4 cr) • LSC 101 (2 cr) • LSC 103 (1 cr) • HES (1 cr) • Depending on your AP and transfer credits, you may have chosen courses in different disciplines.   37. Mypack portal • You are responsible for enrolling in classes each semester, including for this coming Fall. To help you learn the system, you should explore the “Enhanced Enrollment Guide” pdf tutorial prior to searching for and enrolling in classes. This and other tutorials can be found on the Registration and Records website. • Before you can enroll for the fall, you must complete the short survey found at the end of this enrollment guide. Once you submit the survey, an advisor will be notified to release your advising hold (usually within 1-2 business days). You will not be able to enroll until you complete the survey and your hold is released. Actually, this is true each semester at NC State – your advisor will need to release your advising hold before you can enroll. • Enrollment for incoming students begins June 9th; students cannot enroll in fall courses before this date.   38. Advising in LSFY • Your academic advisor is assigned based on your section of LSC 103 (or alternate 103 course). You will have a chance to meet and speak with your assigned advisor during New Student Orientation for LSFY students on • July 22-23, 2014 or • July 23-24, 2014 • In the meantime, use our general LSFY email account to ask any questions you have regarding class selection and enrollment. This account is monitored by all of the LSFY advisors Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. • LifeSciencesFY@ncsu.edu Go to Orientation next

  39. orientation • Don’t forget to register for LSFY New Student Orientation! • There are two sessions to choose from: • July 22 – 23, 2014 • July 23 – 24, 2014 • During Orientation, you will meet your Advisor, learn more about the various academic programs that comprise the LSFY, and have the opportunity meet some of our life sciences faculty.   40. Final Thoughts • You must take the survey (linked below) before you can enroll in classes. Once you submit the survey, please allow 1-2 business days for us to release your advising hold, making it possible for you to enroll beginning June 9th. In the meantime, you can explore the Enrollment Wizard in MyPack and put classes into your shopping cart. • Using MyPack, you should enroll in 15-16 credit hours for the fall. If you think you want to take more or fewer credit hours, you may want to contact an advisor. • Advisors will be in communication with you prior to New Student Orientation this summer.
