  1. Edward Weston, 1886-1958 In Edward Weston: On Photographyedited by Peter C. Bunnell, Edward Weston explained his philosophy of photographing landscapes, at least at that time in his life: I am not trying to express myself through photography, impose my personality upon nature (any manifestation of life) but without prejudice nor falsification to become identified with nature, to know things in their very essence, so that what I record is not an interpretation—my idea of what nature should be—but a revelation or a piercing of the smoke-screen artificially cast over life by irrelevant, humanly limited exigencies, into an absolute, impersonal recognition.

  2. Discuss Weston’s use of formal elements.

  3. Compare and contrast these photos in terms of their formal elements:

  4. What attracts Weston to these forms?

  5. Cypress Root and Succulents

  6. Point Lobos, 1946

  7. Cypress Point, 1929

  8. Point Lobos, 1929

  9. Cypress Point, 1930

  10. Point Lobos, 1930

  12. What can you take away from Weston’s use of formal elements to use in your own landscapes?
