MISUSING GOD’S BLESSING WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO COMMIT ADULTERY?
WITH OUR THOUGHTS & WORDS • Read Matthew 5:28. From the context, you can understand what it means to look at a person lustfully. Explain what it means? To look at a person with impure, indecent, and immoral thoughts.
WITH OUR THOUGHTS & WORDS • In our last lesson, we learned that God provided a special way of expressing love within marriage—sexual union. Why is it a sin even to desire sexual intimacy without the commitment of marriage? God says sex is reserved only for two people married to each other. Even that desire to have sex without being married violates God’s plan for marriage.
WITH OUR THOUGHTS & WORDS • Recall the Bible story of Joseph and Potiphar’s wife in Genesis 39:4-12. Potiphar’s wife began to think about having sex with Joseph. Why was it sinful for her to have such thoughts? She was breaking God’s plan for marriage by breaking her promise to her husband and by dishonoring their marriage.
WITH OUR THOUGHTS & WORDS • Satan has many tools that he uses to tempt us to lust. How can some clothing styles encourage sinful thoughts? Clothing that is too tight or too revealing may highlight parts of the body and arouse lustful thoughts.
WITH OUR THOUGHTS & WORDS • Read Ephesians 5:3,4. These verses show that we can also sin against the Sixth Commandment by the words we speak. In what way could our words make us guilty of committing adultery? Shameful talk about certain body parts, dirty stories and dirty jokes dishonors God’s special gift of marriage.

WITH OUR BODIES • Recall the Bible story of David and Bathsheba in 2 Samuel 11:1-17. How did David give in to the temptation to commit adultery? David accidentally saw a beautiful woman bathing. He then lusted after her, sent for her, and slept with her.
WITH OUR BODIES • At what point did David’s sin of adultery begin? When he allowed himself to look at Bathsheba with the desire to have her.
WITH OUR BODIES • David found out that Bathsheba was pregnant. What did he do which showed that he hadn’t repented of his sin. He schemed to make it appear as though the child was her husband’s. When that didn’t work, David plotted to have her husband killed so he could marry her.
WITH OUR BODIES • In Psalm 32:3-4, David wrote about the spiritual struggle he went through as he tried to ignore the sin he had committed. Describe that turmoil. His bones were wasting away as he groaned in agony. God’s hand pressed down on him so he had no strength left.
WITH OUR BODIES • Sins of adultery are often committed in secret. David tried to keep his sin secret. Young people try to hide adultery from their parents. Spouses try to hid their adultery from each other. Read Ephesians 5:11,12. What underscores the seriousness of these sins done in secret? God says it is a shame even to talk about these sins.
WITH OUR BODIES • Read Matthew 19:9. A spouse’s adultery is one of only two reasons God allows for divorce. Evaluate this statement: The fact that God allows for divorce if a spouse has been unfaithful tells us something about what adultery does to a marriage. Yes. By the adultery, the spouse has already destroyed the marriage promise and commitment, which is the heart of marriage.
WITH OUR BODIES 13. “Why shouldn’t we live together?” a couple asks. Why shouldn’t they? God says they shouldn’t. They haven’t committed themselves to each other. Their relationship is based on selfish desires and not on a desire to live for and love the other person for the rest of their lives.
