Finding Meaning in High School • College is a beginning – not an end. • Avoid getting into college for college’s sake • Find something that interests you and pursue it
Linguistics?? • North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad (NACLO) • No prior knowledge necessary • Round 1: Early February • Make sure to register on time!!
Research • Find a mentor • Do a project • Sell it • Science Fair, Siemens Competition, Intel STS, JSHS, etc.
Olympiad Contests • Math: just over 150,000 • Biology & Chemistry: 10,000 each • Physics: about 3600 • Computer Science: 1000?
Math Olympiad • AMC10/12: 150,000 participants • AIME: 10,000 participants • USA(J)MO: 500 participants • Do past problems from the contests • Artofproblemsolving.com – books, online classes and resources forum
Physics Olympiad • F=ma exam: 3600 • USAPhO Semifinal exam: 500 • Past contests available on U.S. Physics Team website • Textbooks (must read all, not just the AP Physics sections)
Chemistry Olympiad • Local Round: 10,000 total • USNCO (not USACO): 1000 (at most two allowed per school) • Mostly AP Chemistry material… bits and pieces of organic chemistry • Do lots of problems!
Biology Olympiad • USABO First round: 10,000 • USABO Semifinal: 500 • All material is from Campbell’s “Biology” textbook – a significant portion is covered in AP Biology
Advice on Bio… • “Read Campbell to familiarize yourself with the basics. Try to get research opportunities, as you learn a lot (both practical and theoretical skills) from the hands on experience. Comp Sci Olympiad • USACO: several contests throughout the year, given through the website • Language: C, C++, Java, or Pascal • Training portal and past contests available on the website
