Silver Jubilee Federal Government College, Odogbolu 1981 -1986 Set 25th Anniversary Celebrations& Class Re-union Scheduled for 2011
The Mission To put together a befitting 25th Anniversary (Silver Jubilee) celebrations for the 1981- 1986 FEGO set To continue to develop, grow and ensure sustainable networking amongst members of the FEGO 1986 set. To give back appreciably to the institution as part of the groups social responsibility to its Alma Mater
Brief Background General meeting held on 25th April 2010 in Lagos, Nigeria to deliberate on organization and planning for the 25th Anniversary (Silver Jubilee) celebrations of the FEGO 1986 set Nomination of members into key roles to drive the re-union planning and organization process – Inauguration of steering committee Various ideas were muted with respect to the following: “What to do” for anniversary celebration “Where to do” the celebrations “When to do” the celebrations – I.e. Appropriate timing Give back to Alma Mata Type / kind of give back Scale of give back
The Mandate As part of the resolutions of the inaugural meeting of the steering committee held on 29 May 2010, a team of at least 4 members were requested to visit the school with the following objectives in mind Meet with the Principal to have a clear understanding of schools urgent needs and requirements. Do a first hand appraisal of the existing academic / learning environment and facilities within the school Identify potential areas where 1986 group could give back Provide a feedback to the group on the outcome of the school visit.
Our Findings The teams findings can be grouped into four broad areas Infrastructure & general amenities Learning Environment Academic standards / Quality Extra curricular
Our Findings A brief feedback on the identified areas are as follows: Infrastructure & general amenities School is a poor shadow of its old self when compared to the 1981 – 1986 years Infrastructure are poorly maintained and mostly dilapidated Maintenance culture is practically non- existent, though mainly arising from poor funding and Government beaurocracy Basis hygiene needs are hardly met. Students use pit latrine Perpetual power outage damage to transformer amoured cable Learning Environment Leakages in roofing of most Classrooms Hostels very dirty and very run down. Some Boys Hostels appear to be structurally defective Basis hygiene needs are hardly met – Unkempt environment & people Seemingly poor attention to students welfare by School authority Perception that even teachers have given up hope on any significant form of improvement / transformation Inadequate learning facilities – Library dilapidated and obsolete, No functional computer laboratory
Our Findings – Cont’d A brief feedback on the identified areas are as follows: Academic standards / Quality Only Senior Secondary school available – JSS (Form 1 to Form 3) phased out, though this is a national issue and applies to all Federal Unity Colleges Quality of New SSS entrants appear questionable Students appear like a mixed multitude with no real common thread in their foundation. Classrooms lack adequate chairs and tables
Our Findings – Cont’d A brief feedback on the identified areas are as follows: Extra Curricular – Sports etc Sports facilities non functional. Sports field overgrown and bushy, arising from breakdown in tractor. Tractor Slasher / blade needs to be replaced. Nearest tractor for hire is 3 hours away from FEGO No football field, Tennis Court, Hockey, Basketball etc. Students express themselves in graffiti all over school and hostel wall
Our Findings – Cont’d The attached pictures will paint a more graphic illustration of the current status of the school as it relates to these four broad areas.
Our Findings - Areas of Concern Arising from the poor support in the area of much needed capital expenditure (i.e provision of relevant infrastructure) from the Government towards the schools, the huge burden of attempting to maintain the rapidly deteriorating existing infrastructure in the face of little of no funding makes it even more difficult to appreciate any little effort being put in by the new leadership of the school. The Junior block that was renovated by the 1981- 1986 set about 4years ago remains the most outstanding structure in any part of the school today. It will require huge investment of funds to begin to attempt any form of real transformation to the school. Without a doubt, the discussions for this will go far beyond the previous or current attempt by the 1981- 1986 or any other set and will really need a dig deep approach.
Next Steps Conclude on what to do - Form of silver jubilee celebrations Conclude on Where to do – Venue(s) and duration Conclude on when to do – July or August 2011 Determine what level and manner of involvement or contribution goes to giving back to Alma Mater – What percentage of our total contributions go to giving back Commencement of an aggressive / accelerated fund raising for the upcoming event and or programme
Summary The conclusions on the ideas muted at the various meetings held with respect to the scale and type of anniversary celebrations to pursue will be summarized and classified into categories for common and possibly on-line voting. The trip to FEGO was a real eye opener for all and definitely puts a whole new twist to the intention to give back in an appreciable manner to the Alma Mater. A general resolution and consensus is targeted for September 2010 to enable adequate timing to plan and organize appropriately
Our Mission Long Live FEGO!! Long Live members 1981 -1986 set!!!
