College of Arts, Sciences, and Business • John McManus (History & Political Science) has published a new book on WWII, Hell Before Their Very Eyes: American Soldiers Liberate Concentration Camps in Germany, April 1945 (Johns Hopkins Press) • Diana Ahmad (History & Political Science) has been named a Curators’ Teaching Professor, effective January 1, 2016 • The iGEM design team won third place at the 2015 Jamboree for its project “Defending North American Bats from the Emerging White-nose Epidemic” • Honglan Shi (Chemistry) has received funds totaling $20,687 from the LabTech America, Inc. for her project: “Validation/Optimization of Automatic Solid Phase Extraction Methods” • Dan Reardon’s (English & Tech Com) article, “Blended and Asynchronous Course Effectiveness in First-Year Composition: A Case Study,” which used S&T classrooms as data collection sites, has been accepted by Teacher-Scholar: The Journal of the State Comprehensive University

College of Engineering and Computing • Significant Departmental Awards: Four GAANN (Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need) Awards: Mining and Nuclear, Electrical and Computer, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical and Aerospace. University Transportation Center (RE-CAST) receives a third year of funding (Sept. 2015-16) from U.S. DOT. • Faculty and Alumni Awards and Recognition: Muthana Al-Dahhan, Chem Eng, named Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. Shari Dunn-Norman and Larry Britt ‘79 GeoE, Soc. of Petroleum Engineering’s Distinguish Membership Award. Jie Gao and Xiaodong Yang, MAE, published in Nature: Scientific Reports. Kamal Khayat,CArE, named Fellow of RILEM, the International Union of Laboratories and Experts in Construction Materials, Systems and Structure. Suzanna Long,EMSE, named Fellow of the ASEM and received the Franklin Woodbury Award. Bruce McMillin, Comp. Sci., elected to Board of Governors of the IEEE Computer Society. Joe Newkirk,MSE, named a Fellow of the ASM. Dave Richardson, CArE, named Fellow of the American Concrete Institute. Joshua Rovey, MAE, received the 2016 AIAA Lawrence Sperry Award for contributions by a young person. James Spehr’64 & ’69 MetE, presented the Thomas J. O’Keefe Memorial Lecture on October 22nd. Steve Watkins, ECE, elected to the board of Governors of the IEEE Education Society Reza Zoughi, ECE, elected president of the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society. • Student Recognition: The Ceramic Engineering Honor Society, Keramos, received the nation’s Outstanding Chapter Award at the MS&T 2015 Conference held in Columbus, OH. The student group, Materials Advantage, received a Chapter of Excellence Award at the MS&T 2015 Conference held in Columbus, OH. EMSE won the ASEM Founders Award for Best Undergraduate Program and Best Student Chapter.

Office of Undergraduate Studies • Experiential Learning Awards & Service Learning Awards • Electronic Nomination Form is due November 20, 2015 • 1 Faculty and 1 Staff Award per year   • Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol - March 15, 2016 • Electronic Nomination Form is due December 11, 2015 • Hit the Ground Running (HGR) • 91 Students • 9 out of 37 Intensive Algebra students earned credit by exam for College Algebra. (24%) • 15 out of 31 College Algebra students earned credit by exam for College Algebra. (48%) • 18 out of 21 Trigonometry students earned credit by exam for Trigonometry (and the other three earned a waiver of trigonometry) (86%) • Honor Seminar • 142 New Freshman for FS2015

Office of Graduate Studies • Recent Recruiting Events • 23 different universities visited • 130+ students reached, contacts will be sent to departments and followed up with by Graduate Studies • Chancellor’s Distinguished Fellowship • Deadline: Dec. 5 for best consideration • Experience S&T (campus visit program) • Next visit date: Nov. 19-20 • Now open to international students residing in U.S. • What about Graduate School? Event – Oct. 12-14 • 90+ S&T Undergrad students in attendance over a 3 day period • 30+ S&T Grad Students/Faculty available to discuss grad school options • Graduate Fair – Oct. 7 • Partnered with the Student Success Center to create the Majors & Minors and Graduate Degrees Fair • 25 graduate programs represented • Technical Editing • 84 requests for technical editing so far FS 2015 • Each edit completed in less than 2 weeks • Thesis/Dissertation Format Checks – Final Copy due Nov. 4 • 98 theses/dissertations turned in for FS 2015 graduates • Graduate Studies Specialists Advising Survey • Main question: How satisfied are you with advising you have received today? • Average response: 4.83/5 point scale, 5 being “Very satisfied”

  14. Enrollment Management • Thank you to everyone that contributed to the Open House on November 14. We continue to have good numbers, especially for majors in the College of Arts, Sciences, and Business. • Chancellor’s Scholarship finalists will be on campus Saturday, December 5. 100 of our most talented applicants for Fall 2016. • Commencement Ceremony will be on Saturday, December 19 at 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. • Student Veteran Resource Center – Opened this fall, located in the Baptist Student Center serving campus student service-members and veterans as a resource to assist them to reach their educational goals.

Office of Sponsored Programs Summary of FY16 activities year-to-date (September) Number of funded proposals up 20% for a total of 101 Total dollars is $14M which is down 10% Number of new proposals submitted is down 18% at 107 Total dollars is $32.5M which is down 33% Number of active awards is down by 2% at 588 Total expenditures is $12.3M which is up 6% Net grant and contract expenditures is $8.8M which is up 5% F&A recovered is $1.6M which is down 11%
