  2. Program Overview • Anti-bullying intervention targeted at bystanders • Theory of Freeing • Education and empowerment

  3. Population: Alton High School • Total school population: 2,097 students • Three class periods • Sophomore- Senior grade levels • Health classes

  4. Needs Assessment • 37.8 percent of AHS students reporting being victimized within the past 12 months (as compared to 10 percent of a national sample) • 32.8 percent of AHS students reporting having been the perpetrator of bullying within the past 12 months (as compared to 13 percent of a national sample)

  5. Mission Statement & Goals • The mission of The Beef About Bullies program is to provide high school students with the knowledge and skills to combat and prevent bullying. Goal 1: To increase knowledge about the negative effects of bullying. Goal 2: To provide bullying intervention skills to students. Goal 3: To increase students perceived ability to intervene in a bullying situation.

  6. Evaluation Methods • Pre-Test • Post-Test

  7. Objectives & Activities • Objective 1.1: After The Beef About Bullies program on bullying prevention, at least 40% of the students will be able to identify three negative effects of being bullied. (82%-Met)

  8. Objectives & Activities • Objective 1.2: After The Beef About Bullies program, 50% of students will be able to identify three ways to cope with the effects of bullying. (67%- Met)

  9. Objectives & Activities • Objective 1.3: After The Beef About Bullies program, 40% of the students will be able to recognize five warning signs of potential suicide. (54%- Met)

  10. Objectives & Activities • Objective 1.4: After The Beef About Bullies program, when given options on the posttest, 60% of students will be able to identify two reasons why people bully. (72%-Met)

  11. Objectives & Activities • Objective 2.1: After The Beef About Bullies program, 45% of the students will be able to identify at least five warning signs of bullying. (70%-Met)

  12. Objectives & Activities • Objective 2.2: After The Beef About Bullies program, 50% of the students will feel that reporting a bullying incident to a faculty member will effectively stop bullying. (43%-Unmet)

  13. Objectives & Activities • Objective 2.3: After The Beef About Bullies program, 75% of the students will be able to identify two peers with which they can discuss a bullying incident. (78%-Met)

  14. Objectives & Activities • Objective 2.4: After The Beef About Bullies program, 100% of the students will be able to write their catch phrase for stopping a bully. (91%-Unmet)

  15. Objectives & Activities • Objective 3.1: After The Beef About Bullies program, 40% of the students will indicate that they strongly agree or agree that they feel confident stepping in during a bullying situation. (71%-Met)

  16. Recommendations • Get to know your group members • Choose your group members and project site wisely • Communication is KEY • Set a time to meet with your group members outside of class • Insist on having an accurate count of those in your population
