A Guide to Social Media usage for SU Elections. It’s so confusing where do I start?. Decide on 2/3 core network sites. We suggest that you use the social media which you are most comfortable with and also which you feel will be most effective for your campaign in elections.

Decide on 2/3 core network sites We suggest that you use the social media which you are most comfortable with and also which you feel will be most effective for your campaign in elections. • FACEBOOK – 1 in every 13 people on earth is on facebook. • Twitter - #YourSUElections • YouTube – If you wish to create a campaign video then YouTube is a great way to get it online. These are by no means all the social media sites online, you may wish to experiment with others, but be aware you have a limited amount of time to campaign and gain interest of your fellow students. A creative yet simple campaign will be best.
Be Organised • Create a plan for your online presence. (Don’t worry this can be quick and simple, just have one) • Make sure you know want to say and when. • Write down all your passwords somewhere safe, getting locked out mid way through campaigning isn’t a good idea!
Facebook Has more than 650 million active users. Although you don’t need all of them! There are a large amount of UoG students on facebook. • Create a group, share this group with other people (remember to add suweb to the group. Email a link to your group to jbarnes@glos.ac.uk) • Cover photos / profile photos is a great way to show that you are running for elections. You can even gets your friends to show their support and change theirs to your posters / artwork • Imagery is a great way to interact with fellow students, just make sure its appropriate to use.
Twitter Twitter is a great way to connect through social media, however please remember not everyone uses twitter. • Please us #YourSUElections on as many tweets as possible. • Our Students Union twitter account is: @yoursu • #Don’t #hashtag #every #word • Connecting with others alternative social media with help towards your campaign.
YouTube With over 72 hours of content uploaded every minute, YouTube is the king of online video content. • Don’t Create a YouTube video on a whim, instead create a quality video that will engage your target audience (Fellow students). • Create a watermark and make sure you link to the correct site, for your manifesto etc. • You can share and increase followers through your other channels by developing a YouTube video.
Do’s & Dont’s • Give great content that your fellow students will share. • Be engaging – communicate on a daily basis with your network. • Be consistent – stick with the same message. • Be transparent to your fellow students Do Don’t • Be pushy – people don’t respond well. Some students just don’t want to engage! • Rely on one application – each network has its own strengths. • Forget to thank people • Make spelling mistakes
