Whiskey Rebellion • Hamilton sets up a new tax on Whiskey • Traditional beverage-farmers could make from corn • Whiskey Rebellion: Think back to the Stamp Act what happened? • Rebels closed courts and attacked collectors in W. PA • Washington gathers 12,000 military men and sends to Pittsburgh to end rebellion • Ends rebellion and shows American government is serious about enforcing the laws.

Jeffersonian Republicans • Whiskey Rebellion+peace with GB=lost support • Jefferson and state leaders promoting resistance to Federalists in letters to one another • Critics of the Federalists (Republicans or Democratic-Republicans) b/c they stood for more democratic republic. This is not the same as the Republic party today. This party is now called the Jeffersonian Republicans. • First two parties in United States: Federalists/Republicans • Political Party: group of people who seek to win election. • One side (The Jeffersonians) • Believe that there is a serious plot to overturn State governments and substitute monarchy to present republican system. • Other side (Federalists) • Serious plot to overturn general government and elevate the separate powers of the State upon its ruins.

Election of 1796 • 1792: Washington wins election (97%) • By end of second term, chose not to run for third term (Sets a precedent followed in later times). • Election of 1796: • John Adams (Federalist): President • Thomas Pinckney (Vice President) • Thomas Jefferson (Republican) • Aaron Burr (Vice President) • Adams becomes President, Jefferson VP under Constitution

Washington Says Farewell • Address of 1796: Drew on years of experience and offered much advice to the young nation for years ahead. • Remained above bickering between Federalists and Republicans • Political parties were bad for the nation • Agitates community with jealousy; Riots and Insurrection • Foreign policy of neutrality (Location of United States was key) Why? • Becomes commander of American army during Adams Presidency. • Dies 2 years after presidency.
