Aspiring Medic / Lawyer/ Vet / Scientist / Engineer / Architect / Managers / Mathematician / Musician and Accountant…… If you already has plans for your future career, there are two things that you need to consider: • Which university could you go to and what GCSEs grades and A levels do you need to get onto the course? • What else can you do if you get to the end of this pathway and then change your mind?

  6. THE BEST OF THE REST! What do you universities have a reputation for being good at? Do your research – some universities score higher for student satisfaction in different areas. Which Uni/Complete uni guide – Loughborough/Brunel/Heriot Watt/Man Met/Nottingham Trent/Coventry/Edge Hill/Liverpool John Moores/Salford/Central Lancashire Do your research – some universities score higher for student satisfaction in different areas.

Which A Level subjects will give you the most options at University? • Mathematics and Further Mathematics • English Literature • Physics • Biology • Chemistry • Geography • History • Languages Facilitating subjects are A Level subjects in which a range of skills and knowledge will have been learnt. The Universities will therefore be sure that your child is able to cope and succeed on the courses that they have chosen at university as a result of this prior learning.

  10. Which A Level subjects will give you the most options at University? • Will you do just A Level? 3 or 4 subjects? • Will you do just Applied A Levels? Vocational courses – Btec/Technicals • Will you do a mixture of both? • All these options are available to you but make sure your university course says this is ok. • How do you learn best? Exams in both – but coursework in Vocational Courses as well – worth around 60% of you end result.

Examples of A level requirements for Russell Groups Universities • Medicine – Need Chemistry, Biology and Maths or Physics, other variations may limit the University choices. • Veterinary Science - Need Chemistry, biology and Maths or Physics. • Dentistry – Chemistry, Biology and Maths or Physics • Architecture - Arts and Science. • Economics – usually Maths, consider history, computer science, business • Biomedical sciences - Biology , Chemistry and Maths or Physics. • Chemical Engineering - chemistry, maths and sometimes Physics. • Accountancy - some may require Maths. • European Studies require MFL, consider Eng Lit, History. • Teacher training - primary or secondary. Do your research as pathways vary.

What about my GCSE grades? • These are important too • C grade in English and Maths and some include Science • B grade in English for Business at Leeds • Teaching – grade C in Maths and English • Chemical Engineering – B Maths and Science • Some Medicine degrees are asking for an A* • Don’t get to the end of your A Level courses and then find out you needed a B in Biology! • To do A Levels and do well – the recommendation is usually a B in the subject you want to study and to study some subjects particular skills are needed to access the course eg a B in Maths for Psychology is recommended

  14. Alternative Courses • Higher National Certificates • Higher National Diplomas • Foundation Degrees • Vocationally specific qualifications (level 3 and above) • Funding for such programs can come through Student Finance Direct or an Advanced Learner Loan

  15. Levels of apprenticeship Apprenticeships can take between 1 – 4 years to complete dependent on the level Nearly all apprenticeships require GCSE C or above in Maths and English

Application Process Training Provider Route Employer Route Apply directly for a vacancy The size of the company will dictate the number of vacancies Multiple applications • Apply for an in a particular vocational area • Details will be held passed on to potential employers • May require you complete a short employability course

  22. Sixth Form Admissions What next? • Deadline for completed applications • Term 2 interview with Mrs Flaherty or Miss Geary. To discuss options • Transition workshops - subject specific advice and guidance term 2 • Focus on revision and getting the best grades possible at GCSE • Get your results and enrol in August 2017 • Start Sixth Form Sept 2017

What Now? • Do the research! • Ask questions – teachers/sixth form staff/parents/older brothers and sisters – in the subject presentations you have opted into. • Work hard– don’t waste the next few months! Settle in lessons – be proactive – better grades at GCSE mean more options at A Level and beyond! • Don’t worry if you are not sure – you will be placed on courses that you will succeed on – work with your strengths and your interests • 3 A levels – vocational and/or academic – will open a degree/Level 3 Apprenticeship opportunity no matter what subject they are! • Good Luck!
