Objectives: Slide #1 1. Given a Mimio and Mimio software, high school teachers should be able to work collaboratively to design at least one engaging and interactive lesson for his/her subject matter. 2. Given a Mimio, Mimio software, and MimioVote and clickers, high school teachers will be able to create a minimum of 5 standardized questions using the Mimio software, collect responses using MimioVote, and interpret the data collected. 3. Given the Mimio software and the Mimio, high school teachers should be able to present a completed lesson of their content area to their colleagues and assess them using MimioVote. Detailed Script This is the most important slide of the training and should be mentioned first. It provides a focus for the training and addresses the outcomes that each teacher should be able to complete successfully. Trainees are introduced to what is expected of them throughout this training. Trainer should note/point to the different hardware items that will be used while reading over the objectives so that the trainees can become familiar with the product and associate a name to each piece of technology that will be used throughout the training. Slide #2 What is a Mimio? Mimios are engaging and easy to use educational technology and software (Mimio, 2014). Detailed Script Introduce the components of a Mimio (hardware/software) Instruct on how to calibrate the Mimio to properly align writing and diagrams on the exact image. This is important because it introduces the Mimio itself and in order to use the product, one needs to know how it turns on and the materials that it uses to navigate from one screen to the next. Toolbar Slide #3 . Toolbar is located on the left-hand side of screen. Skills you will be practicing: - Writing - Highlighting - Creating a text box - Exploring the Gallery - Adding an image - Deleting an item - Importing a PowerPoint presentation Toolbar is located on the left-hand side of screen. Skills you will be practicing: - Writing - Highlighting - Creating a text box - Exploring the Gallery - Adding an image - Deleting an item Detailed Script Pass out image of MimioTools so that each trainee has a short cut list next to them when referencing particular items from the toolbar. Before exploring MimioTools, make sure to go over the top toolbar on the screen. It is essential for teachers to know how to create new slides and where cut, copy, and paste occur. Explore each icon in the MimioTools so that trainees can become familiar with items to add/delete information onto a Mimio slide. Allow for a longer amount of time to explore the Gallery. Discuss how the gallery is set up by category and how to search for a particular image. Watch the Mimio Tutorial that discusses information about the Gallery. Instruct teachers to open either a word document or a PowerPoint presentation into Mimio and instruct how to save it as a Mimio. By clicking on the word “Gallery,” a link to an online tutorial video, provided by Mimio.com, will be viewed by all trainees that discusses the key features of the Gallery and how to navigate it. In case the link does not work, use this one: http://support.mimio.com/downloads/tutorials/MS8/Searching_MimioStudio_Gallery.mov. Online tutorials make students more excited to learn (Huneycutt, 2013).
Importing Documents Slide #4 Old PowerPoints can now be transformed into interactive slides! Why re-create the wheel? Trainees can import existing Word, PowerPoint, or PDF documents into MimioStudio Notebook! Detailed Script Pass out a copy of this image to all trainees so that they have instructions to follow and refer back to when needed. It is important for teachers to understand that all the hard work they did to create PowerPoint presentations or Word documents can now be imported into the Mimio program. Trainees can now use the existing files to make them more interactive and engaging for the students. Interactivity / Navigation N/A
Create a Slide Slide #5 • Task: • Create a slide regarding a topic of your choice. • Requirements: • Must contain a textbox. • Must contain at least one image from Gallery. • Must contain multiple colors and fonts. Detailed Script Now that the trainees have learned how to utilize all the necessary tools in order to create a slide, they should now attempt to create one. They can choose any topic that they wish to present to the trainer and potentially other trainees. Trainees can create more than one slide, but should continue to meet all requirements per slide. Interactivity / Navigation N/A
Subject Specific Part #1 Slide #6 • Task: • Separate into groups by subject area. • Each group will be creating a series of slides to form a lesson plan. • Lesson plan should be for a 45 minute class period. • Minimum of 5 slides need to be created. • Slides should include text, images, transitions, and other animations. • At least 2 of the slides must be interactive for the students. • Slides should use Gallery for additional images and animations. Detailed Script This is a crucial part to the training. During this time teachers should be creating a final product to be used to enhance and guide instruction for a 45 minute lesson. Teachers are becoming more familiar with navigating through the software and using the necessary tools to create slides. A typed handout will be given to each content area group offering topic suggestions, examples of slides/previously created lessons, and resources to available to use. Interactivity / Navigation N/A
MimioVote Slide #8 Why are Clickers beneficial? What are Clickers used for? Are students really engaged? Detailed Script • This slide will be reviewed after the break. • Explain benefits of MimioVote • Every student is engaged and responding. • Immediate feedback as to whether or not students understood the question/material • Easy to use • Graphs that support understanding Interactivity / Navigation N/A
How to Create Questions Slide #9 • Back to the Gallery!!!! • All MimioVote questions are part of the Gallery. • Different options available: • True/False • Yes/No • Multiple Choice (up to 5 choices) Detailed Script In order to accomplish objectives #2 and #3, this part of the training is critical. Teachers will watch a short tutorial (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29x40exy9T8)on how to create MimioVote questions and an introduction to the various types of MimioVote questions. Technology such as MimioVote gets students engaged. “Student engagement levels [are] significantly increased” with the use of technology and virtual learning (Xu, 2010, p. 287). Teachers will each receive a Clicker to test out how to use them while being asked a couple questions by the trainer at this time. Interactivity / Navigation A YouTube clip for a tutorial on creating questions and determine results can be viewed on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29x40exy9T8 by clicking the word “options.”
Reviewing Results Slide #10 How does one see if students answer the questions correctly or incorrectly? What should a trainee do if the majority of students get the question incorrect? Is each students’ progress tracked? Can I assess students individually with the use of MimioVote? Detailed Script One of the most powerful tools of the Mimio software is MimioVote. This allows teachers to see the percentage of students that are understanding the material versus those that don’t. Once the question is polled, students’ responses are recorded in Mimio Gradebook. The teacher will not know who got the question right immediately, but can reference Gradebook if necessary. However, the teacher can immediately see if the majority of the class answered the question correctly. If the students answered correctly, the teacher should move forward with the next material, but if the majority of students answered incorrectly, the teacher should re-teach the material and pose another similar question. MimioVote also allows students to complete assessments at his/her own pace. Each student is provided with a Clicker and can answer questions at his/her own pace. Interactivity / Navigation N/A
Set Up Mimio Gradebook Slide #11 In order for students to use the Clickers, Mimio Gradebook must be set up by class with student names and/or Clicker numbers. Watch this tutorial to get started! Detailed Script Trainees must set up their Gradebook by class in order for MimioVote to work properly and record any data. The online tutorial will help get all trainees started on setting up their own Gradebook. Once tutorial is over, give directions once again with accompanying handout. Interactivity / Navigation When the word “tutorial” is clicked, a link to an online tutorial video is provided for instruction on how to set up a classroom and students in Mimio Gradebook. The following link should also work in case the initial one does not: http://www.mimio.com/en-NA/Training/On-Demand-Video-Tutorials.aspx
Ready, Set, Poll!!! Slide #12 Task: Create a slide that poses a standardized question using the Gallery that will be answered by other trainees using the Clickers while recording responses in the Mimio Gradebook all while using MimioVote software. Detailed Script This slide fits here versus after the subject areas separately meet again because it allows for a formative assessment to occur. The trainer can determine trouble areas that some of the trainees might be having. This can help alleviate stress and frustration later on. This also gives teachers an opportunity to have some fun and increase engagement with the Clickers before asking specific and serious questions in their content areas. If trainees can complete this task, objective #3 has been successfully completed. Interactivity / Navigation N/A
Subject Specific Part #2 Slide #13 Task: Create a minimum of 5 standardized questions that can be asked of the students pertaining to the lesson that was created in the morning session. Detailed Script Separate trainees into content specific groups. Each group should further develop their lesson plan by adding in a minimum of 5 standardized questions. Trainer should circulate amongst groups to make sure that all is going according to plan and to assist with any troubleshooting issues. Interactivity / Navigation N/A
Care to Share Slide #14 Subject Specific groups will share a brief summary of their developed lesson plan to the trainer and other trainee groups. Feedback is encouraged from not only the trainer, but also from other trainee groups. Detailed Script Different groups will present their final products of the morning session in front of the trainer and the other trainee groups. A rubric will be used to determine whether or not Objective #1 and #2 were accomplished. Interactivity / Navigation Each group will be provided with a USB to save their work onto. The USB should be plugged into the main computer with projector in order for presentations to be shared.
Supplemental Material Slide #15 • Copies of the Toolbar image • Copies of directions for importing Word, PowerPoint, or PDF files into Mimio • Content Specific instructions • Suggestions (Ex: Different parts of a Cell, Graphing a Line, Counting Money) • Examples of previously created lessons (use the Animation tab with some printed out as a step by step guide) • Additional resources available to use (Other online tutorials, www.mimio.com) • Mimio Training Tutorial Videos • Each of these tutorial videos provide a short lesson on how to use or create each of the following topics: • Gallery • Creating Questions • Setting Up Gradebook • Trainees should be following each of the steps to create their own product for better understanding.
