  11. But…there is a gap between sketching ? And a ‘Finished’ Project

  12. But…there is a gap between sketching ? And a ‘Finished’ Project Someone has to pull it all together! - Set-up trips - Guide where they go - Knows what’s needed - Coordinate multiple groups - Crunch the data - on and on…….

  13. But…there is a gap between sketching Project Leader And a ‘Finished’ Project

  14. Project Leader A Project Leader ‘owns’ the cave project, pushing it along until it is ‘complete’

  15. Project Leader A Project Leader ‘owns’ the cave project, pushing it along until it is ‘complete’ The Project leader does NOT have to be the main cartographer!!

  16. What are some of the skills you will need to be a project leader?

  17. What are some of the skills you will need to be a project leader? Got These – Right? • 1) Learning how to Cave • 2) Surveyor • 3) Sketcher

  18. What are some of the skills you will need to be a project leader? Project Leadership Remember – you are trying to get the manpower to get cave data from your cave – and setting the tone of the data coming back

  19. Project Leadership • You set-up the trips • You decide the dates/cave • You make the phone calls! You are trying to convince people to come to YOUR cave • With multiple groups, you set the goal

  20. Project Leadership You set the level of quality of the data - Backsites - Sketching - Feet/inch - sketch to scale - Detail - Cross sections/running profiles - Additional information needed

  21. Project Leadership It does no good to get back unusable data – either incorrect shots or bad sketches For Example – Which would you rather see when drafting the map from notes This? Or this?

  22. Project Leadership Don’t be an asshole about it - Lead by example - Share Info frequently - Welcome all comers - Have fun on trips - Try not to scoop - Bribes work

  23. Also – Don’t forget to keep the landowner updated With project caves, we tend to return several times, so keeping good relations with the landowner is KEY

  24. What are some of the skills you will need to be a project leader? • Organization • You are the one keeping track of the survey itself • You are usually cranking through the data

  25. You should get familiar with one of the Survey Programs - Compass

  26. You should get familiar with one of the Survey Programs - Walls

  27. Organization • Keep a Lead List – Work List

  28. Organization • Who/Where/When

  29. Organization • Keep track of Specialized Equipment Needed

  30. Organization • Keep track of Specialized Equipment Needed • Make sure the teams have the needed equipment

  31. What are some of the skills you will need to be a project leader? Cartography You don’t need to be the main cartographer to be a project leader – You can recruit another cartographer to draw-up the map. But most project leaders DO draw-up the final map!

  32. Cartography You don’t need to be an expert cartographer. Being a project leader, and owning the map are a great way to learn the skills!

  33. Took me 15 years and a couple dozen maps!

  34. What else?

  35. What else? A Cave!!!

  36. You need a cave to ‘own’ • There are many way to find a project cave: • - Ridgewalk • Talk to landowners/ Landowner contact • Other resources in the grotto, many of us know about caves that need to be mapped • Old caves without maps, or with old maps that need to be remapped

  37. So the steps are pretty simple: • Find a cave • 2) Plan trips and convince folks to cave/ survey with you • 3) Keep the data updated • 4) When you have enough, start working on the final map! • 5) Keep at it!

  38. Sins of a Project Leader • Lose the data Back it up! • Lose interest Pass it along • Never draw the map Keep updating. Don’t fall behind • Forget who Helps Make sure notes are correct and updated • Keeping stuff secret DON’T

  39. End!
